Inspired by Brian at Resonance, here's a map of the states I've been in:

(From the sponsor: create your own personalized map of the USA or check out our California travel guide)
Like Brian, some only count as drive-throughs or airport connections. I won't post my world map because it's embarrassing, but I did manage to score seven countries (counting the U.S.).
Speaking of international travel, The Mrs. was going through some old papers and found my passport. It expired on September 11th, 2001. Guess I need to get it renewed (and get out more), but that was kind of creepy.

My Travel Map
Here's mine. I like how South Dakota is it's own little island in my American travels, so far. As for world travel, I only have 6 nations on my map (counting USA), so you're ahead of me.

They have airports in South Dakota?
Um
Bummer that all the states on the map show up in red. I'd post mine, which is 46 or so out of 50, but I can't bear to turn Massachusetts, NY and Pennsylvania red. ;)
Airports in SD?
Yes and it was a real treat, too. Heh.
About 18 years ago, I arrived at the Rapid City airport. My favorite part was when we disembarked (on the tarmac) and were pointed to three glass doors all lined up beside each other. The doors were marked "Gate 1," "Gate 2," and "Gate 3." We were told to enter through "Gate 3." Mind you, each door went into the exact same lobby wth no dividers beyond probably a rope barrier between the three doors. Anyone who thought about opening "Gate 1" or "Gate 2" was reminded quickly that arriving flights from Chicago were to enter through "Gate 3." It would have made more sense to me if there was another flight unloading at the time, but I dutifully lined up with everyone else to enter through "Gate 3."
South Dakota was an attractive and quirky place and I mostly enjoyed my visit. I was on assignment to do a story about an event at Mount Rushmore. I recall the entire state seemed to smell like clover.
Map Fun
You know, I'm just sick enough to think to myself, "You know what would be fun? One of these maps that let's me see what counties I've visited in each state."
South Dakota is a pretty
South Dakota is a pretty cool place. The Badlands are a sight to behold, like going to another planet. It's like the plains are rolling along all nice and green and smooth, and all of a sudden they're all busted up by a hammer of the gods. Mt. Rushmore is amazing, too. I also won $1000 on a quarter poker machine in a motel bar in Deadwood. Got me a nice new flyrod in Bozeman with some (most?) of the proceeds.
Airports in Western states
They have airports in South Dakota?
My brother used to date a girl from Nebraska. To visit her parents' home, they would fly to the nearest airport - and then drive 8 hours.
The size of those states is hard to grasp for us poor easterners.
Here's mine. Although I'll
Here's mine. Although I'll be adding New Jersey this October. Wedding.

Looks like you've successfully avoided that big swath of midwest red states.
Yup. Pity.
Yup. Pity.
However....
Some states are only good for a drive through.
Of the remaining states, I
Of the remaining states, I recommend Maine be at the top of your list.
We were thinking about a
We were thinking about a fall color New England road trip. Any recommendations appreciated. We'll probably stop in DC, too, and maybe NYC, and probably Atlantic City. Heh.
fall color New England towns
Well, it's hard to go wrong with most of the smallish liberal-arts-college towns in New England in the fall. In Maine's case, the vicinity of Colby or Bowdoin & Bates are winners (but have to remember that fall starts/ends earrrrly there). You could stick to places like Northhampton/Amherst, Williamstown, or Pittsfield in Massachusetts, but IMHO the locals there aren't nearly as interesting as the Mainers. You'll have more crowds from NYC in western/central Massachusetts, too.
