Knoxville native Trevor Bayne started out racing go-karts while in Gresham Middle School. Seven years later, one day after his twentieth birthday, the youngest driver on record, Trevor Bayne, driving for the oldest NASCAR team, Wood Brothers, wins the Daytona 500.

After winning the race, He then exclaimed on the radio to his teammates: "I don't even know where to go. How do you get to victory lane?"

"He is Tim Tebow at 200 mph."

"He joked about now being bigger than Peyton Manning and Kenny Chesney in his hometown of Knoxville, Tenn."

"And the coolest part of this whole story is this kid -- this ecstatic, charismatic kid -- singlehandedly resurrected the Wood Brothers from irrelevance. "

It's been a long time since I

It's been a long time since I met Cal Yarbrough at the Costner-Eagleton Ford where my Dad was parts mgr. I don't follow racing much these days but I sure like the Wood Bros. connection.

I'm on the Bayne Train

A great story and a grea insight into a kid growing up in Central and at Gibbs and doing what he had always wanted to do. Doing it with class and with prayer and demonstrating a tremendous amount of humility and genuineness that is not ordinarily found in the sports world these days.

A tip of the hat to Trevor Bayne and the Wood Brothers Mercury team. It is good to have them back in NASCAR in a big, big way.

Trevor Bayne

A neighbor of mine knows Trevor well and has known him since Trevor was really a kid. Because of my neighbor, I'd been following Trevor a little since he signed with DEI as a developmental driver and then racing for Michael Waltrip in the Nationwide series last year.

Allen (my neighbor) said Trevor had always been real nice. Trevor is just that. While we were at a Nationwide race at the Nashville Superspeedway, Allen introduced me and my then 9 year old to Trevor in the garages. We had a good 15-20 minute talk with Trevor. At one point Allen said "Trevor, you need to get us some of your driver's ballcaps." Trevor replied, with all seriousness, "Allen, I don't have any caps- who do you think I am?"

I'm sure Trevor has plenty of caps now.

Trevor adoration continues

In the Orlando Sentinel:

NASCAR's crusty, iconic hero [Dale Earnhardt] may finally rest in peace a decade after his death. The Intimidator can step aside and make way for a new Speed Racer. They have much in common. Both dropped out of high school to focus on racing. They each made personal sacrifices to keep on running — Bayne moved out of his home in Knoxville to live alone in Mooresville when he was 15 years old because it was a hub for racing.

He [Trevor Bayne] is Buster Douglas bringing Mike Tyson to the canvas in Tokyo in 1990.

He is Joe Willie Namath wagging his index finger at the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

He is a bunch of U.S hockey team neophytes beating the Soviets in the Olympics in 1980.
