Is there anyone out there that can help us with relocating? We're a married couple looking for a vibrant area that's safe for us and our pets. I've gotten so many various accounts from landlords, but I wanted the skinny on where to live. My husband and I need to be close to UT for school and work, and we're used to a very bike friendly community. We're in a college rental now at the heart of Colorado State's campus neighborhood, so we're pretty insensitive to parties and noise. I didn't see any good message boards any other places and it seems likes nobody in Knoxville uses Craigslist, so I apologize if this is an inappropriate forum. You can email me at mgshearin@hotmail.com if you have any helpful hints (or places to live!) or please start a discussion here.

You would probably have good
You would probably have good luck on Knoxblab
http://funhouserock.com/funhouse/blab/index.php
Will you be renting or
Will you be renting or buying?
Do you want an apartment, condo, house?
There is a University of Tennesse student community in Fort Sanders area (right at the UT campus). Apartments and condos. Safe? Don't know.
There is Maplehurst Park, right next to campus. Very small neighborhood of apartments in old houses. Safe? Maybe, probably.
There is South Knoxville, right across the river from downtown and the University (two or three miles). Apartments and small rental houses. Safe? Mostly.
Specifically, there is the Island Home area of South Knoxville, right across the river from downtown and the University (two or three miles). Small rental houses. Safe? Think so.
There is Sequoyah Hills, down the street from the University (two or three miles). More upscale. Great green areas along the river. Has a dog park (no fence). Limited apartments, rental condos, and small houses. Safe? Think so.
There is downtown Knoxville (within 1/2 to 1 mile). Condo rentals, maybe apartments, not sure. Very little green space. Safe? Probably.
Vibrant? Definition: pulsating with vigor and energy; lively:
the vibrant life of a large city.
Don't know what to say about this. Some say downtown. Maybe you should visit for several days (weekend and two week days).
Bike friendly? Knoxville is not all that bike friendly. There are bike trails here and there. If you are biking to a destination via streets, Knoxville is not bike friendly.
"Bike friendly? Knoxville is
"Bike friendly? Knoxville is not all that bike friendly. There are bike trails here and there. If you are biking to a destination via streets, Knoxville is not bike friendly."
Knoxville is very bikeable and has excellent greeways that make total sense for commuting, especially from Sequoyah Hills. I commuted everyday on my bike from North Knoxville and never had problems beyond the classic redneck hatred for bicycles and dogs. Sure there is some urban riding and a couple of cracking hills but if you are on a bike, you 1. better be safe and 2. are not in a hurry.

Well, smalc, the person was
Well, smalc, the person was trying to have a conversaion here, thread hijacker! (But that's correct, the folks over at the Knox Blab will be helpful.)
To the original poster, a couple of years ago a journalism professor moving to UT from Boston asked the same thing. He ended up in the Maplehurst community that bizgrrl mentioned earlier, and seems to like it for the most part. It's near the campus and downtown (biking/walking distance). You might be able to contact him through his website linked above, and he might be able to give you the skinny on that neighborhood, and the other neighborhoods he looked at and what he found. Bizgrrl pretty much runs down the rest of your options. Let us know if you want more details. And welcome to East Tennessee!
Hey, sorry about that. I was
Hey, sorry about that. I was just thinking that this a frequent topic over on the Blab, and there are many proponents of the "close-in" areas there.
Just kidding. Like I said,
Just kidding. Like I said, folks on the Blab are most friendly and helfpul.
True, but...
We also have our ears pricked on the Blab for TallGirl and Sundrop Sue posts which appear to be some sort of Sociology 212 experiment. The "Knoxville has a craig's list but no one uses it" phrase above is suspiciously similar to those posts. Just saying.
If I were this family, I would consider Oakwood/Lincoln Park for price and flavor.

Fountain City is pretty nice
Fountain City is pretty nice (pretty active community, wonderful public park and duck pond, up-and-coming shops and specialty niche boutiques). Also Old North Knoxville (lots of older Victorian style houses that people are fixing up). South Knoxville has a lot to offer as well (established neighborhoods, close to downtown and UT, reasonable prices, not as crowded as West Knoxville). West Knoxville is a little pricier, but has some nice bike trails in the Cherokee Boulevard/Sequoyah Hills area. Most biking right now by necessity has to take place on the road, but we're working on getting bike trails...the current mayor of Knoxville, Bill Haslam is a bike rider so that is helpful, even if he is a Republican...
They did just open a dog park, but for the life of me I can't remember where it is. I must be gettin' senile. LOL
Honestly, any area of town has it's attractive features and it's blemishes too. The worst problem that affects any resident north, south, east, or west is the constant construction of the interstates and roads. Getting across town takes patience, perseverance, and fuel.

Fountain City is pretty nice
Fountain City is pretty nice ...
Not close to UT though.
Old North Knoxville...
Closer than Fountain City but still not all that close to UT.

Most shopping can be done on campus, south, west, or downtown (limited). If you live south, on campus, or downtown you can pretty much avoid the interstates west if you want. Not much road construction otherwise south and west.
Could also add the Other South Knoxville, off Alcoa Hwy. Four to five miles from the heart of campus. Some rental houses, large yards, not bike friendly, safe.
Yeah but, the KAT bus runs
Yeah but, the KAT bus runs regularly and has bike racks on the bus so you could ride the bus to downtown and bike from there to campus and around downtown. Same for North Knoxville.
But I agree if you're looking for something that must be close to UT then you'd probably be better off in Fort Sanders/ Maplehurst or down towards Sequoyah Hills or South Knoxville along the riverfront heading west.
I'm just saying that Fountain City and Old North Knoxville have quieter tree lined streets where folks don't think it's the Indy 500 every day. Bike riding through these neighborhoods is safer than having to take to the roads in west Knoxville, which always impressed me as kind of a dodge'ems deathwish for bike riders.
"You can't fix stupid..." Ron White
Good point on the KAT and
Good point on the KAT and bike racks.
Agreed, good point. Fountain
Agreed, good point. Fountain City is a nice community.
Will also add the Westwood
Will also add the Westwood neighborhood, just off Kingston Pike. 4-5 miles to campus, close to bus line. Very convenient to just about everything you would need. Some rental houses. Safe? Think so.
I live in Island Home Park
I live in Island Home Park (on the south side of the river, approx. 2 1/2 miles upstream from downtown). My husband bikes to work downtown, and a UT professor down the street from us bikes to work at UT. There's really a pretty decent route from here to there, although in general Knoxville's not very bike friendly.
If you're looking to rent, there's a very nice smallish house for rent in the 'hood. Several for sale too, although they're larger.
Craigslist comment???
Mutulj, not sure what you meant by the remark on Craigslist usage. All my comment meant was that I have gotten very used to the Craigslist community, and it is very underutilized in comparison to Fort Collins.
Gemini-could you send me the info about the place you saw for rent in your neighborhoos? Thx, M
Metulji just meant blabsters
Metulji just meant blabsters got a bit burned by a poster saying she was moving to Knoxville. It seems the poster wasn't being very upfront about who she really was. Not sure what her motives were in pretending to be something she wasn't.
No worries here. We are
No worries here. We are definitely moving. Reserved the Uhaul, shut off utilities, the whole 9. We have to be out Aug 1, and there aren't any good MBA programs in Colorado (or at least one that's worth the money). It's funny, we decided back in May to move but everyone keeps asking us if we're still moving. Just because we don't have a place to live yet doesn't mean we're not moving. It's getting abit annoying, but I think it's just that our friends don't want us to move, plus this is our home and always will be so I'm sure we won't be gone for more than 5 years.
I moved from Boulder to
I moved from Boulder to Knoxville in a U-Haul back in 1995 myself.
All I gotta say about that is that you may never find yourself leaving TN.
Hope it all works out for the best for you. Cheers and good luck.
(Based on your criteria, I wouldn't be much of a help for you choosing somewhere to live. I wound up moving to Nashville in 1997 after making a significant life change. Be sure to pack in a few cases of New Belgium beers -- Fat Tire, etc. -- if you like those, because you can't get them in Knoxville.)

Yeah we're planning on
Yeah we're planning on bringing a stock of beer with us, but not likely to be New Belgium. Their beer, and particularly Fat Tire, is some of the most overrated stuff out there. Heck I think Mountain Sun/Southern Sun is a better brewery than NBB. I'm sure part of it is how large NBB (both size and ego) has become since we moved here. Actually, we're pretty big beer afficionados and looking forward to catching some Sweetwater Blue out of Atlanta and Terrapin Brews out of Athens.
