A movement is afoot to replace sex education in our schools with abstinence-only programs, which many other school systems are moving away from because they have been demonstrated to be ineffective at best, harmful at worst.

Apparently, a snafu with parental consent forms at Hardin Valley last fall has snowballed into a movement to ban Planned Parenthood's education programs from all of KCS.

I attended a presentation this evening by the anti-PP / pro-abstinence folks, and I also reviewed the brochure they have been circulating to parents. Short story? Lots of misinformation, many things taken out of context, all in a crusade to ban Planned Parenthood presentations from our schools (and latching onto one student who didn't get a parental consent form and who was apparently shocked by what she learned).

Should the parents have gotten the consent form and had the opportunity to opt out their kid? Of course. Some parents aren't comfortable with their 17-year old kid hearing about oral sex or masturbation from an educated health professional. They would much rather their kids hear it from their friends who watch "Jersey Shore." I understand some parents think that way. Is that a reason to ban a good, effective program? I don't think so.

A few nuggets from this evening:
"We don't need a committee to review this."
(No, by all means, let's operate on hyperbole and emotion and ignore facts)

"We have some freeze frames of some of the videos from the web site that are shocking"
(Oh, let's certainly take things out of context. I watched the videos, one promoted abstinence, most of the rest were promoting safe sex, even using a condom during oral sex. But by all means, let's take it out of context with a single still image).

"After the program, we will circulate amongst you and say things that we wouldn't say in an open forum."
(?? Like WHAT? 'somebody should shoot them', something like THAT??).

"Single motherhood rose from 30% to 40% between 2002 and 2008"
(Um... wasn't that the heyday period of abstinence education? That's for making the case against you...)

I invite you to go to the web site on your own ((link...)) and make your own decision. If you get the chance, arrange to meet one of the peer counselors with the "FYI" program and find out how bright, brave, and well-educated these peer counselors are.

Everyone tonight was recruited to attend the March 2nd School Board meeting (5pm). If you don't want to see Knox County Schools return to the dark ages, and our teen pregnancy rates skyrocket, drop by and voice your support.

Best dang discussion EVER on KnoxViews!

First, thanks again, Pam...you lit the fire...let's see how quick the truth gets stomped out.

I went by the PP in East Knox yesterday to give them another small donation; several protestors were there and it was closed.

My solution and answer to all the sanctimonious and ignorant: One of our FEMALE Legislators needs to write a strict bill of punishment for the MALE half of the sex act by rape, incest, child abuse, or one that results in pregnancy without a female's consent or protection. I say if convicted, the slug should be forced to have a vasectomy, without drugs, and spend 5 years in prison for EACH charge of rape. And we could march and protest any doctor that refuses to perform this surgery. Fair is fair.

All our children must be provided with factual information about sexual activity and how to protect themselves from disease and pregnancy. I sure could have used this info back in 1961.

Flashback

Just Saying's picture

Heart & Spirt

I have a child that is a senior in the Knox County School system. She has had classes designed since her early years to "inform" her and her classmates about the dangers of disease & sex. Nasty photos intended to traumatize young minds burned into their brains forever.

Never did I hear one time about any class designed to speak to their hearts about just waiting for sex until they were really ready and adults.

People are people and pressure pushes lots of young ones into big mistakes. The very lucky kids are the ones with parents or caregivers that are balancing out the noise of the world. Go ahead and talk about the protection issues. The dangers are very real. Talk about the heart of the child and the spirit because they are the future. Once damaged then society pays the price.

Building up the spirit and mind to be strong enough to say no to sex is a very good idea. Many young people are just burned out because they carry around guilt and self hate. Very bad ideas are thrown at our children from many directions. Good ideas should not be feared by those who want the best for the them.

R. Neal's picture

It was my understanding that

It was my understanding that abstinence is the ONLY curriculum allowed to be taught by school employees if the school receives any federal funding, which is why PP is brought in to teach the rest of the lesson?

reform4's picture

I don't think that's the case...

.. it's still up to localities, it's just that the Feds have pushed massive grants ONLY FOR those programs. Receiving federal funds related to general education doesn't dictate their health education programs.

Sex Ed In Knox County Schools

The very first paragraph on this page, giving the "issue," is incorrect. This is NOT about stopping sex ed in Knox County Schools. It is about asking our teachers/school officials to FOLLOW THE STATE GUIDELINES AND LIFETIME WELLNESS CURRICULUM GUIDLINES ONLY. Not to go OUTSIDE them on their own. PERIOD. If you read the STATE LAW and the LW CURRICULUM, they CLEARLY state that the programs in the schools ARE ABSTINENCE-BASED ALREADY. No one is trying to "get rid of sex ed" or MAKE THEM "abstinence-based." THEY ALREADY ARE.

ALSO--these parents do not have a problem with the "sex ed" portion of the curricula -- State Law AND LW Curriculum. No one is against INFORMATION here, so everyone needs to stop perpetrating that myth. It is about -- FIRST, keeping parents completely out of the loop on ANY of it -- and then going OUTSIDE the already established state law and LW Curriculum -- THAT is the issue. I think even progressive parents can agree that that is inappropriate. We all need to KNOW what is being taught BEFORE it is being taught -- hence the reason for "state laws" and "curriculum guidlines."

The videos were not shown at the meeting because they are thoroughly disgusting. The "still images" showed a teenager standing there and receiving oral sex, then another guy stands up and wipes his mouth. Another guy is standing there talking about using condoms for oral sex. This is appropriate for teenagers at school? Another one shows a guy "penis" talking to a woman "vagina" cartoon. The "penis" guy gets excited and wipes the top of his head -- and then it gets worse. Google "How Pregnancy Happens" and takecaredownthere.org. Watch ALL of the videos and decide for yourself. I think all parents agree we can do better than this?

Most parents are completely aware of the dangers facing their children out there and have no desire to "return to the dark ages." To do so would be to put our children in grave danger. I think progressives could also agree that they would not want a completely political, totally God-based, no information type program with an agenda, either. BOTH are inappropriate. We should ALL be looking for middle ground from a group that does not MAKE MONEY off our kids by recruiting them in their schools -- no matter WHAT their agenda. Add to that the most recent scandals involving PP -- go to liveaction.org and watch them. BE INFORMED. All of us can agree that a neutral group in the schools giving INFORMATION that is the best INFORMATION, is the best way to go for all of us. Protecting our kids with the best information, with no bias EITHER WAY, makes sense for everyone. Thanks for letting me say my piece here.

reform4's picture

Can you cite the state law please?

I've searched relevant TCA sections and I don't see it.

Also- in regards do your other post- do you seriously believe that kids learn that sex exists from attending a sex Ed class a few days a year, and NOT from their friends, TV commercials, movies, prime-time programming, magazine covers in the grocery aisle, etc, etc?

Please. Grow up. Use the brain God gave you, and consider the silliness of your weak causality argument.

jane austen's picture

I, too, had a difficult time

I, too, had a difficult time finding the state law information and I do not currently have a digital copy or I would include the link for you here -- I am currently working. I will try to get this and post it for everyone.

OF COURSE -- kids are getting saturated with all sorts of inaccurate and dangerous information from all forms of media out there -- HENCE the REASON we need FACTUAL information in the school setting -- where kids still respect the fact that if their teachers/schools/officials are teaching it -- it must CORRECT and OKAY. All the more reason we need to be vigilant about WHAT they are exposed to at school and NOT allow the same garbage out there INTO their classroom. This allows them to contrast the two and MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS.

To degenerate into telling me to "grow up" and "use the brain God gave me" illustrates your inability to support your view. This is NOT personal.

Legitimate media has dropped

Legitimate media has dropped the acorn-style sting that was perpetrated on PP because it is a non story. PP isn't recruiting children. Oral sex is still sex and teens need to quit pretending it doesn't count. Opt-out protocol is the only issue that needs to be addressed.

jane austen's picture

PP Sting

All media outlets have reported on this news story -- it is not "dropped," it is being investigated currently and ongoing for many months now. See liveaction.org for the Memphis, TN videos, for example, which our Tennessee legislators viewed. They would be remiss in protecting our children as state leaders if they allowed ANY group to access our children that had ANY question of predatory practices. Planned Parenthood's agenda is easily available for anyone to research; never mind the current and ongoing investigations. Just Google Planned Parenthood - Lawsuits - and one can see this.

On the Knox County Approved Speakers List, one sees the Red Cross, the police department, etc. Planned Parenthood sticks out like a red flag -- none of the other groups are regularly picketed. ANY organization that is regularly picketed means that the community is already divided on the organization -- Hence, they are are not a NEUTRAL group.

jane austen's picture

Sex Ed in Knox County Schools

Another thing I forgot to add to the previous poster remarking that abstinence programs have failed and that is illustrated by the high pregnancy rate.

If you want to use that argument, then you must go back farther in history and see that when sex education came into the schools is when the pregnancy rate FIRST began skyrocketing.

As far as the argument that is often used that some kids don't get educated at home -- THOSE KIDS are the ones that need the BEST information -- with no one to guide them -- the school would be the ONLY avenue for THEM. Factual -- unbiased -- appropriate INFORMATION. Not a free-for-all anything-goes and come into my clinic where I can make some money off of you. That is common sense. Progressives and conservatives can all AGREE on this issue. I hope that we ALL want what is best for our collective children.

jane austen's picture

More PP Videos

Both CNN and FOX -- supposedly "opposing" views -- are currently reporting on this story.

Three more undercover videos were just released yesterday --

Falls Church, VA
Charlottesville, VA
Roanoke, VA

This after New Jersey and Richmond, VA -- just this week alone. This is going on NATIONWIDE.

Videos speak for themselves. If livaction.org or anyone else were to "make up" these videos and/or edit them, they would be setting themselves up for a serious lawsuit. Lila Rose, herself, would already be in jail for this offense, yet she is not. The fact still remains that ANY group with these kinds of allegations should not be anywhere near children in schools.

Rachel's picture

I'm assuming that a person as

I'm assuming that a person as informed as yourself knows that it has been confirmed that many of these videos have been "doctored."

And that PP recognized this for the setup it was, and reported it to the police.

jane austen's picture

State Law Link

Here is the link to view Tennessee State Law regarding sex education in the public schools:

(link...)

j.f.m.'s picture

Did you read your own

Did you read your own link?

To quote from it (emphasis added):

Any such course in sex education shall, in addition to teaching facts concerning human reproduction, hygiene and health concerns, include presentations encouraging abstinence from sexual intercourse during the teen and pre-teen years. With respect to sex education courses otherwise offered in accordance with the requirements of this subsection, no instructor shall be construed to be in violation of this section for answering in good faith any question, or series of questions, germane and material to the course, asked of the instructor and initiated by a student or students enrolled in the course.

So, to be clear, this is not an abstinence-based curriculum. It is a broad education curriculum that includes presentations encouraging abstincence. I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone about that. I don't know of any parents who are in a hurry for their kids to become sexually active.

Also, the PP instructor in Knox County has said that she has only ever mentioned abortion when asked about it by students, which the state law clearly allows and seemingly encourages, in the interest of providing answers to students who want them.

Further down in that link, you get to the standards established under the law by the state Board of Education (again emphasis added):

The student will:

6.1 recognize abstinence from sexual activity as a positive choice.

6.2 identify positive aspects of a relationship.

6.3 identify ways of resisting persuasive tactics regarding sexual involvement.

6.4 define sexual harassment, promiscuity, and date rape and the effects of each.

6.5 discuss the influence of families, traditions, economic factors, and cultural activities on one’s sexuality.

6.6 explain human reproduction.

6.7 explore alternatives to consequences of teenage pregnancy including adoption, single parenting, teenage marriage, and abortion.

6.8 compare various contraceptive methods

6.9 describe gender difference, expectation, and biases

6.10 examine the lifelong responsibilities and requirements of being a parent

Again, this is not an abstinence-based curriculum. It is a well-rounded curriculum clearly aimed at providing information about reproductive biology and its ramifications. Including the knowledge that abstinence is "a positive choice," which I don't think you'll find anyone arguing with. What it doesn't say is that it is the only choice, or even the only positive choice. And if you'll notice, it also mandates awareness of abortion as "an option," which it is. But in any case, that's not even what PP is teaching. And, contrary to a lot of the claims being made, PP is not an abortion group. It is a reproductive health organization that does, in some places, offer abortion procedures. In 2008, abortion made up 3 percent of its total services.

FYI.

j.f.m.'s picture

By the way, Gail Collins

By the way, Gail Collins wrote about all this today at the national level:

But here’s the most notable thing about this whole debate: The people trying to put Planned Parenthood out of business do not seem concerned about what would happen to the 1.85 million low-income women who get family-planning help and medical care at the clinics each year. It just doesn’t come up. There’s not even a vague contingency plan.

jane austen's picture

PP Out of Business?

Once again, the issue is changed to something other than the issue HERE. This is not about "putting PP out of business." It is about whether or not PP is the BEST group to be in our SCHOOLS -- TEACHING OUR KIDS. By all means, if you do not have a child in the Knox County School System and you support PP, go give them donations.

This is about whether or not a group, ANY GROUP, should "teach" our kids their "agenda" and make money off of the kids to boot. Let's say a local church group wanted to come in and "teach" about God and told the girls if they got pregnant, they could come to their "home for pregnant girls" and the church group would make MONEY from that home and/or services. Would that be acceptable? NO. Same thing here. Because it may support YOUR particular agenda does not mean it is right for EVERYONE because, sooner or later, the "group" teaching your child will NOT be the group YOU want.

Is this the best we can do? All of us? On the pp.org website, they tell the kids, under "virginity" that "there are no right or wrong answers to these questions." Do progressives believe that their 8-year-old daughter is ready for sex? Obviously, there ARE right or wrong answers to these questions. #2 -- The pp.org website REDEFINES the word "Abstinence." Google -- "Planned Parenthood -- Abstinence -- Outercourse." Click on "How Do I Have Outercourse?" Do YOU think this is beyond the state/LW guidelines given to parents?

It is not a complicated issue. I guess I still believe that progressives AND conservatives can find common ground when it comes to protecting our kids.

By the way -- I encourage everyone to read "Unplanned" the new book released in January by Abby Johnson, a former executive director of Planned Parenthood. The women she counseled were, in her words, often in danger from the procedures they were given -- it is hard to argue about her conclusions -- she was a believer and she LIVED it.

About "doctoring tapes." NOWHERE do we find anyone in the media putting forth that "conclusion." Maybe in opinion articles, again, by people with an obvious "agenda." It is hard to argue with videotape -- if, indeed, they were "doctored" the group Live Action would be in serious legal jeopardy. Just a thought, again.

j.f.m.'s picture

Do progressives believe that

Do progressives believe that their 8-year-old daughter is ready for sex?

I'm sorry, but what is wrong with you? Who is talking about 8-year-olds having sex? Terry Frank is on the same thing with her typically gonzo column about this, talking about "little kiddies" and "little Johnny." You're practically accusing the school system of child molestation, for God's sake.

We're talking about high school students here. Many of whom are already sexually active or are going to be by the time they graduate. If you want to have a serious discussion about how to educate them about their own biology, that's fine. But infantilizing them -- "little kiddies" -- or pretending that anyone wants 8-year-olds to have sex is just hysteria. It makes you seem very unserious, about a fairly serious subject.

jane austen's picture

Facts

Planned Parenthood is already approved to "teach" in ALL KNOX COUNTY SCHOOLS. Hence, it would seem wise to check out their ideas about how to teach the younger set. Check out "It's Perfectly Normal" -- clearly stating on the front cover that it is for 10 years old and up.

On the back cover of the book and on the inside 2nd page, this book is glowingly endorsed by Planned Parenthood as wonderful for this age group. There are also two books for even younger kids by the same authors -- check them out yourself.

Planned Parenthood is about "getting our kids from the beginning" and normalizing behavior that is not, for a lot of parents, "normal." They do this in many different ways. If there is "no right or wrong answer" to when to lose virginity, kids can then believe that sex is okay at younger and younger ages. This has been borne out by recent news stories about elementary kids actually engaging in sexual acts in the classroom recently at the grade school level, while the teacher's back was turned.

One startling example of this type of "normalizing" is what is going on in public schools in Knox County -- even at the middle school age level. If you do not talk to your kids about these sensitive issues, you may not be aware, but I have heard of several different instances where boys were masturbating IN THE CLASSROOM. These are facts that were unheard of when most of us were in middle school.

This is the reason why we need a group that will present ONLY THE FACTS and not make MORAL JUDGEMENTS, or lack thereof.

Dr. McIntyre was just on a live radio show on 98.7 FM. When asked about this issue, he clearly states that they are looking into this issue. Obviously, there is more to this than meets the eye, or just being "against" PP. To say that the parents in this community that are asking the school system to "play fair" and follow their own guidelines are "not caring about poor, underprivileged women who are helped by PP" is sidetracking the issue here.

reform4's picture

Again, why don't you just OPT OUT?

Opt your kids out. Problem solved.

I remember when I was 10 talking to my friends and trying to figure out what sex was. Lots of misinformation. I certainly heard from a friend what the sex act entailed. But he also told me a lot of false information which, looking back, is really funny now.

But every parent has the right for their children to receive a proper education by a trained professional, using a curriculum designed to be age-specific and realistically adjusted to what kids are being exposed to. YOU simply want to censor that information and take that freedom away from me and my family.

Quit stomping on my freedoms. Sign your opt-out form and shut up. If you want your kid to learn from a friend who watches Jersey Shore, that's fine. I'd rather my kid learn from a professional than from Snooki.

3. See other post regarding your disgusting implication regarding 8-year olds.

5. Kids have already 'redefined abstinence' in reaction to being preached abstinence and being pushed into abstinence pledges. The PP video simply reflects what kids are already doing as substitutes. If those substitutes keep them from becoming pregnant and getting STDs, maybe that's not a bad thing. If you want to keep this information away from their kids and keep hoping they won't do anything, that's OK. You can just opt out with a simple form. But I prefer to offer an effective program to our high schoolers.

Lila Rose and Live Action could not possibly "invent" what these employees did and said and how they reacted to them. PP has fired several of these employees -- why? Please look at the videos and decide for yourself -- liveaction.org. There is an ongoing pattern with this organization -- no matter what you believe about what they DO.

Proof the video was edited:

Live Action moved audio from one part of the conversation to another. The gist is that they are insinuating that she tells the "pimp" how to get around getting an underage prostitute an abortion without parental consent, when actually it was two separate conversations.

The truth is that in almost every office that Rose went to called the police or the FBI to report what they saw. If you familiarize yourself with New Jersey law (laws I don't necessarily agree with), you'll find that, in the unedited version, PP was fully compliant with NJ law. ((link...)).

Meanwhile, the nutcases you support want to legalize rape of children and the mentally handicapped and legalize drug-assisted date rape. You should be more up in arms about THAT.

Is this organization large

Is this organization large enough for you?

There are three things necessary to get people to buy into your edited video, the sophistication of the software, the skill of the editor, and the gullibility of the audience.

It is not "peddling in

It is not "peddling in falsehood" to say that the pp.org website, given to our kids in the classroom, is beyond state law guidelines. It is clearly is and anyone can see it by comparing the state law and what is on the pp.org website.

To say that PP does not get huge amounts of federal money from the taxpayers for their "business" is absolutely wrong. Look at PP's own annual reports.

Once the effective "arguments" run out about this issue, it always comes down to the same excuse: "You can always opt your kid out." A lot of people like to say that we "should not be pushing our moral agenda on all the kids." To that I would say YES. But to remove the "moral issue" means completely NEUTRAL teaching. Not changing things to YOUR way of thinking -- or PP's way of thinking -- which is, as THEY state, "no right or wrong" at all. So -- to you, I am "silencing free speech" if I object to the MORAL TEACHING of others -- yet if you want to inject YOUR beliefs -- or PP's -- then the parents who object should just REMAIN SILENT? Doesn't really seem fair, does it?

PROVE this statement then.

It is not "peddling in falsehood" to say that the pp.org website, given to our kids in the classroom, is beyond state law guidelines.

Again, please cite the relevant section of state law and what PP is presenting within the walls of the school building.

To your last paragraph- it's really simple if you just think:
Presentation of medical facts to an audience that is currently struggling with these issues is, well, it's teaching. Teaching is what we do in our schools.

If you act to prevent EVERYONE from hearing a factual truth based on an argument of morality, that is indeed censorship and pushing your view of morality on my family. If we give you the option to opt-out your kid and teach them in whatever way you choose, without affecting what other families may choose is the right approach, that's providing everyone the freedom the deserve.

If you object to what I and 90% of what other families choose, then yes, I fully expect you to shut the hell up. I expect you not to step on my freedoms.

You really don't understand the concept of freedom, do you? Let me break it down for you: If you have the option to do what you want, and I have the option to do what I want, that means we both have freedom. If you take away the option for me to do what I want to do, so you won't be exposed with having to choose to do what you want to do, then your quest to not have to act/think has interfered on my freedom.

What part of that don't you understand??????

After all they are the parents.

"If we give you the option to opt-out your kid"

Perhaps a special opt-in would be right for your desired class.
Parents could sign a form that entrust their child to that program of education. Clear enough ?

" So you won't be exposed with having to choose to do what you want to do"

That persons point IS not having to be exposed. Many things are not considered desirable to be exposed to in society. That is also freedom. No need to be upset. Just follow the rights of the parents. After all they are the parents.

reform4's picture

They have that right already.

Fill out the form.

Maybe we need to offer a class for dumbass parents that don't know how to fill out a school form?

I don't care if it's an opt-in or opt-out form, that's not the war these parents are fighting. If they want to redesign the form so it's an opt-in system, I'm cool with that, if that gets them to shut up.

I hesitate to think about what you and yours have in mind for all the gay kids in the county but I bet it involves copious amounts of denial and the scent of brimstone.
