With a win over Kentucky this weekend, Dooley racks up a .500 season against ridiculous odds. Speculation is that the Vols have earned a trip to the Music City Bowl, where Dooley would have a chance to improve his record to 7-6 and claim a winning first season.

The thing I like most about Dooley is his sense of humor. Commenting on his excellent catch of a Tyler Bray dumped pass to the sidelines, Dooley said he was just showing them how to catch a football. (The TV commentators were impressed by how the former receiver covered the ball after the catch.) Dooley said next he would field some punts.

And speaking of punts, commenting on a fumbled punt return in the Vanderbilt game Dooley said "there's a new rule they put in" called the "fair catch." "I told our guys if there's a guy in your face, they're going to allow you to stick your hand up and they won't hit you."

UPDATE: A poll...

I couldn't agree more on

I couldn't agree more on Dooley's sense of humor. Some claim it shows a lack of commitment. I view it as keeping life in perspective. It's refreshing.

He comes by that humor thing

He comes by that humor thing honestly -- this from Moxley's Bluestreak:

"The Dooleys have always been a spiritual family. In addition to having a family prayer before dinner, they also had a family prayer every Saturday before a football game. “And, ladies, we prayed to win!” Dooley said firmly. “There wasn’t any of that talk about ‘the best team.’ We prayed to win!”

Yeah, he's kidding around but

Yeah, he's kidding around but he's not kidding around and the players seem to have gotten the message. If you watch his press conferences he's as serious as he can be about (re)building a good program.

I love his sense of humor.

I love his sense of humor. It's so refreshing. More sports guys should show that they know how to laugh.

no coach should ever win an award for going .500...

...even at Vanderbilt.

Anyone who suggests otherwise understands nothing about competing. Steve Spurrier or Gene Chizick are the SEC football coaches of the year.

And less you disqualify Chizick for cheating, then you must similarly show disdain for Bruce Pearl and whomever made the decision to hire Lame Kiffin and Ed Orgeron. (Per my conversation with a member of the UT BoT, Mike Hamilton was warned by SEC commissioner Mike Slive not to hire those two renegades.)
