McGhee Tyson is the home of...
one of the Air National Guard's refueling wings. Those fighter pilots and their jets may be here for training exercises with regard to refueling procedures. I don't know for sure, just saying that is what they do there, so it has a high probability of being for training.

You got it right. McGhee Tyson is a designated base for military aircraft during bad weather. Every military airbase must have an evacuation plan with designated destinations.

I was thinking the family had caught a Labor Day airshow over that way in years past (and that the show took place every Labor Day)?
