Ann Hake has an uplifting article in today's KNS, "The best gift can be our optimism". She says, "Let the joy of my soul embrace renewal, transforming doubts into possibility and elevating disgruntlement into plans and solutions."

Whereas, Leslie Snow (KNS, Dec. 16) wrote about Christmas curmudgeons.

"I smile sympathetically at the cashier and load my groceries on the conveyer belt."

What about a little conversation with the cashier? Maybe the previous customer was without a job? Maybe he's alone at Christmas? Let the cashier know he/she is doing a good job. Bringing cheer to others might have made that ride home full of conversation and hope.

Smiles are contagious. They can make you and those around you feel better.
