Well, duh! (As many of the commenters note.)
New research from the University of Missouri has found that people who walk dogs are more consistent about regular exercise and show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a human companion.
Walking speed with a dog: increased by 28%
Walking speed with a human: increased by 4%
Dog walkers "far more consistent in keeping up with the program".
With Gretchen no longer with us we have sure slacked off on our walking regimen.
Note, the picture with the article sure looks like an adorable Mini-Schnauzer to me.

The time is coming
The time is coming Bizgrrl. Don't fight it, get you another little girl. The second day after I got Lulu I was back in the park walking with her. I may not really want to go but she insists. She is such a joy.

Don't fight it
You are probably right. We will be waiting until after the holidays though. For some reason the holidays make me a little anxious and I don't want to give a new puppy bad vibes.
In all kinds of weather
My little one (o.k. medium-sized now that she's in canine middle age) gets me out nearly every night. When she walks me, we don't go fast - too much pee-mail to read and not enough discipline from me to heel - but we take steps, feel the weather, see the neighbors (mostly good).
Last night, we met the new puggle puppy next door. My girl was not impressed, but she only growled a few times.
I also posted an old snapshot of my first dog on Facebook, sitting bolt upright next to my sister in that tacky old stuffed chair that we left behind when we moved back to Knoxville in the early 1970s.
They inhabit and enrich our lives, and each new "best dog in the world" doesn't dim the love and memory of the ones who came before.
Liberty and justice for all.

Upon being diagnosed with some health problems, one of my uncles on my Mom's side got a dog to walk to help promote exercise. Seems like a good idea.
(The dog was a lab he named "Buddy," in honor of Bill Clinton's lab "Buddy," because my mom's family came from independent mountain-folk New Deal Democrats. I have another uncle who is named "Delano" [pronounced "dell-no" over there] in honor of FDR.)

It was a rough year for Knoxviews pups. We lost ours last tuesday, the 8th. We walked him at various parks every day for twelve years--we sure didn't always feel like doing it, but when he was young we had to burn off his energy or he'd drive us crazy.

My, my, that might be one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen. His fur is so beautiful, as are his ears, and what a face.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. When you have such a companion for so long and are engaged with them every day it can leave a mighty big hole in our hearts and our psyche.

That is their job
When they adopt us humans, it is their job to be our fitness guides, and emotional guides, and nature guides. We are so blessed to have our canine friends for the time that we do.
Doberman
By the way, I know of a 7 year old Dobergirl that needs a good home, should anyone be interested please contact me.
That picture is huge! and I don't know what to do about it. Sorry.

Thanks, Tess, ma am, R., Bizgrrl, and KR... appreciate the thoughts, especially since you've gone through it too recently.
He was pretty darn cute 'til the end, and we sure do miss him. Note that we did name him Duncan (the King) before moving to the 2nd congressional district in TN. He was a yellow dog all the way!
