Houston, the fourth largest city in the US, predominantly Democratic in Texas of all places, has elected Annise Parker for mayor. Why say you is this a big deal? Unlike Knoxville, Houston had already elected a woman for mayor. Unlike Knoxville, Houston had already elected a minority for mayor.

The citizens of Houston have elected an openly gay woman with a partner and three children.

Tonight the voters of Houston have opened the doors to history,” she said. “I acknowledge that. I embrace that. I know what this win means to many of us who thought we could never achieve high office. I know what it means. I understand, because I feel it, too. But now, from this moment, let us join as one community. We are united in one goal in making this city the city that it can be, should be, might be, will be.”

Congratulations Ms. Parker!Congratulations, Houstonians! Congratulations, Texans!

Well, I guess if electing a gay mayor is all it takes to qualify as a liberal bastion, Houston just made it. But from what I've read, the new mayor is anything but a liberal. I mean, kudos and all that, rah rah rah, but she's a conservative. And that's why Houstonians elected her.

I'm pretty sure the post

I'm pretty sure the post does not indicate that "electing a gay mayor" is the only thing that qualifies Houston as being a liberal bastion.

Well, your heading sort of did, but my reply was really more a general response to a lot of comments I've seen. I think it's laudable that the citizens of Houston judged a candidate based on her qualifications for leadership and not on her sexuality or gender. And like everybody else, I'm surprised that people in Houston, of all places, looked past her sexuality. I'm just saying she's conservative, so Houston is still a long way from being a liberal bastion.

Edit: and btw I'm not using "conservative" as a pejorative term. I appreciate Parker's views on fiscal responsibility, and her support of the arts and preservation show she has progressive interests.

Could the heading also have

Could the heading also have been as a result of finding out that Houston is "predominantly democratic"?

Let me comment

I lived in the upper Galveston Bay area in a little burg called Morgans Point for 17 years. Just a few miles down the road from Houston. I was a precinct chair and election judge for 8 years. My son still lives just north of Houston. I also read the Houston paper every day.

This election was a combination of ingredients. First, Houston is pretty liberal. Do not confuse Houston with the suburbs of Montgomery, Fort Bend and Northern Galveston counties. They are a hotbed of bitter, virulent, conservatism. Remember that there is not a single statewide elected Democrat in Texas state government. But Houston, Austin and some of the deep east and deep south parts of the state are still Democratic.

Second, both of the candidates were Dems. Gene Locke her opponent, was a black lawyer who got desperate toward the end of the race and forgot where his loyalties lay. He tried to let some of the anti-gay forces endorse him and only lukewarmedly (great word) said he did not want to introduce that element into the race. He did not tell them he didn't want their endorsement or money. It killed him if he was not already dead. Houston has a very well organized Gay community.

The third thing was that Ms. Parker was actually the best and most experience candidate. She had been city comptroller for a number of years. The only Republican who ran was knocked out in the non partisan primary. This race was very predictable from the start. The media seems to be making more of it than needed.
