The U.S. Department of Energy has approved Tennessee's plan to participate in the State Energy and Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program. The $300 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program will provide Tennessee $5.9 million in funding for rebates.

Several categories of Energy Star certified appliances are eligible for rebates under federal guidelines, but each state must create their own eligibility and administration plan. As approved by the DOE, Tennessee's plan will offer $250 rebates for qualifying energy-efficient heat pumps and central air conditioners, and $40 for qualifying room air conditioners.

TVA will assist with marketing and administration to help reduce the state's operating costs. Consumers receiving rebates may be eligible for other benefits under existing TVA programs.

Tennessee's energy-efficient appliance rebate program will reduce electric consumption by an estimated 16 million kilowatt hours per year. The represents approx. $1.4 million in annual savings and reduces CO2 emissions by 16,000 tons.

The rebate program launches on Earth Day, April 22, 2010.
