Nothing makes me appreciate the necessity of supporting the struggle for full human rights for all queer folk like witnessing the courage and love that manifests when someone comes out to their family and community.

I recently found a series of truly inspiring videos called "Coming Out Stories".
I found it on Netflix streaming, but here's a link to one about the mayor of West Sacramento, who came out to all his constituents in the mayor's annual "state of the city" address, which is the biggest public address of the year for this office.

(link...)

Many other stories are also on this website.
If you've got 20 minutes somewhere in your day and need a lift, this is the thing to watch.

There's one about the Jamaican guy (living in New York) who comes out to his father, which is a really big deal given that in Jamaica it is not at all uncommon for gay men to be stoned to death. Given the attention that Uganda's gay genocide bill is getting, I found it particularly enlightening to hear about places right under our nose that are no better. And as I've found out on this site, Knoxville has its own bloody history of homophobia.

Regardless, check these wonderfully uplifting stories out. Bet you can't keep a dry eye.
