Data.gov. Grab data sets in machine-readable format and crunch away. It's not as open as it could be as it does require a great deal of skill with stats software and the like, but it is still chock full of great stuff.

If you are among the people without that great deal of skill, the Sunlight Foundation has an app for that.

Sunlight offered $10,000 to whoever came up with the best app for digging into the mass of information found on Data.gov. The winner was DataMasher.org, which makes comparing state-by-state data -- from cancer hot spots to CO2 emissions -- a snap.
