A Powell woman with a valid handgun carry permit allegedly pulled her gun on an off-duty Knoxville Police Department official this afternoon in an incident that may have been sparked by road rage, authorities say.

This is getting more and more frequent.

How often does this happen? Is it tracked? At least the fact the alleged perp had a hcp was reported this time.

How could that be?

We know NO ONE with a carry permit could ever do anything wrong, like drink in a bar or pull a piece on a cop!

The 'carry permit' crazy

My question is:
Who was this gun nut protecting when she pulled her gun?

Question 2:
Did the Fool in Harriman on Friday have a permit? Who was he protecting when he shot his pregnant wife while "cleaning his weapon"???

Question 3:
Is it a requirement that the thousands of licensed gun owners have tu surrender their brains, common sense and decency when they get the permits?

It's the Officer's Fault!

Late one night when my cousin was a road sergeant with the county one of his officers was intentionally run off the road in his unmarked car by a guy in a dump truck. When they finally caught him he cried for a break all the way to the detention center. He kept assuring them that he would never have done such a thing if the car had only been marked.

You could be right.

When cops use any kind of force, many are quick to blame them.

When cops are accused of any wrongdoing, many feel they are guilty by virtue of their wearing blue.

When a Roane County deputy and his friend were killed, not only did an awful lot of people say it was the cops fault many said they deserved what they got (I wonder if the woman had shot and killed the policeman if people whould be blaming the officer for his own death.)

Indeed, too often the knee jerk reaction is that it IS the cops fault.

Why is this case different?

Why preclude the possibility that the policeman was at fault or did something to provoke such a drastic response (An off-duty cop once tried run me off the road. My wife and two kids were in the car. Then he brandished both his gun and his badge - at least until I showed him mine - even my badge was bigger than his was.)

Could it be that we like the idea that a permit holder screwed up because it jives with our deeply held feelings about permit holders and firearms in general?

Just asking.

Misfire

Could it be that we like the idea that a permit holder screwed up because it jives with our deeply held feelings about permit holders and firearms in general?

Or could it be because the NRA crowd have been pushing the theory that permit holders don't commit gun crimes, ever?

Bbeanster's barrel just blew up in his face

This is simple arithmetic, not a "theory." The number of permits revoked is easy for you to find on the state's Department of Safety website. All of that was collected for 2008, like it has been since this started (pretty long ago, at this point). Go there, if you are interested in looking at facts. Put that little number of revoked permits on top. (about 260) Draw a little line under it. Look up the total number of permits issued for 2008. Put that great big number (about 218,000 at the end of 2008, up to almost 250,000 now) on top. Work your little fraction there, and see that it is 260/218,000 = .012, rounded to 3 decimal places. .12% That is 1/8 of one percent. Not even 1%. Let that sink in for a minute. And, you may not know it, but they lose their permits for offenses other than violent ones, too.

The above was clearly stated, in public. I was there. Of course, some permit holders will commit crimes. Out of a quarter of a million people, that's inevitable.

Do you really want to be on the side of Big Brother on this issue?

All we are saying is give guns a chance

Yes, sirs, those handgun carrying people are among the most law-abiding people on earth. They only want to defend themselves and their families. Just think how much better it would have been if those two young white people in the currently publilcized courtcase had had guns. It's a "God-given" right although I can't figure that one out. Guns are already amongst us, evil is amongst us, and thank goodness Tennessee is a state with a high percentage of concealed handgun carriers to protect and defend us. Nothing bad ever happens with guns and shit don't stink.

That's the story from the vocal majority at the City Council workshop this evening. Those of us who care about safety for us and our kids while walking the greenways and through the parks just weren't very exciting when telling our stories. Nobody applauded. The messages from the Boards of Directors were pretty bland. Just because it makes sense doesn't mean the powers were listening because there was a bigger story in the room. Ooh, who is running for office? And on NPR they said no liberal Democrats will lose their seat whether or not they support the public option. Only those on the fence face such opposition.

I don't have a moral to this story but felt the need to share.

Quir putting permit holders on pedastals.

Can we please quit putting permit holders up on a pedestal, saying they would never be irresponsible? We've already had this, a guns in bar shooting, and other incidents.

I'm not saying permitting is bad (the training is a good thing). Just don't base public policy on the concept that a piece of paper/card to completelyremove the element of human emotion and stupidity.

Well

If God didn't want us packing heat, then he wouldn't have created us with opposable thumbs! It it self evident, therefore, that carrying concealed handguns is a God given right!

Any figures on how many get

Any figures on how many get permits without actually taking the classes?
