Bring us your hurricane weary. With 1,000 people a day moving TO Florida, there are 400 people a day moving FROM Florida. Some Floridians are choosing "rural" Columbia, Tennessee (Pop. 38,000) to live.

According to the Census Bureau, all of Tennessee may be considered rural, not urban. Census urban classification:

  • core census block groups or blocks that have a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile and
  • surrounding census blocks that have an overall density of at least 500 people per square mile

Here, deep religious faith trumps deep pockets, and, with more than 100 churches in town, you see pastors, not plastic surgeons. This town is more catfish than caviar.

"We're not the beautiful people," says Alton Kelley, executive director of the Middle Tennessee Convention and Visitors Bureau. "There aren't 10 BMWs in town and we like it that way. The bling ends many miles from our borders."

The cost of living draws some to move to Tennessee, cheaper car and home owners insurance, as well as cheaper real estate taxes. Neither state has an income tax. I hope these Floridians check out the "other" Tennessee taxes, income tax on dividends and distributions, a higher sales tax and sales tax on food and drugs.

I welcome the Floridians, New Yorkers, and whoever. Tennessee is a beautiful state to be shared and a little more diversity is welcome.

Well, then, I guess

Well, then, I guess Columbia, TN, is not "rural', except to a Floridian from South Florida.

Consider this. The current

Consider this. The current population for the entire state of Tennessee consists of 5.9 million people living among 41,217 square miles. That's 138 people per square mile.

Now South Florida is largely considered to be comprised of 3 counties; Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. An area of 5,125 square miles or 12% the size of Tennessee. Yet this tri-county area houses 5.35 million people, or 1043 people per square mile.

The contrasts are quite amazing.

When you take out the part

When you take out the part of those counties that is water or wetland, the density rises even more.

The problem is that somebody is letting them escape! Do we need to build the first border fence along Mexico or would some other place give us more immediate results? (Hey, it's a joke...a joke...hionest...)

Pshaw

I'm all for immigration helping to grow our fair community in middle TN but this...

"We're not the beautiful people," says Alton Kelley, executive director of the Middle Tennessee Convention and Visitors Bureau. "There aren't 10 BMWs in town and we like it that way. The bling ends many miles from our borders."

...is pretty much hogwash.

There are at least 10 BMW's in Columbia. And Lexuses. And Jags. Conspicuous consumption is very much alive down yonder. The biggest difference, at least as of late, has been property values. You can still get a decent passel of land for considerably less than you'd pay in Williamson County or Davidson County.

(As "bling" is a linguistic innovation of the African-American community, perhaps what this person means is "people of color." And for that matter, Maury County has less than the state average of those, and about half of what nearby Davidson has.)

Whitescreek, I am glad you

Whitescreek, I am glad you clarified your suggestion, being the semi-native I am. As Carl Hiaasen alluded to the other day on 60 Minutes, Florida is a crazy state, but we love it! We could use more of his kind of crazy in Tennessee.

Not only am I seeing a lot

Not only am I seeing a lot of Florida tags, but also California liscense plates.  In fact, of the four houses in the neighborhood that have recently sold, one family is from Florida and two families are from California.
