What others are saying

I had a great post lined up about the ridiculous front page headline in today's KNS where Knox GOP chair Brian Hornback says Randy Tyree isn't qualified to run for Sheriff because he filed his POST paperwork too late and how that was wrong and I didn't know who was stupider, the Knox GOP for desperately trying to keep another Democrat off the ticket or the KNS for running the story. After checking the Tennessee Code Annotated, however, it appears they are right, and there aren't too many ways you can interpret it other than Tyree missed the deadline as laid out in state law (which the KNS could have quoted*, but didn't, because I guess it was easier to just transcribe Hornback's memo). Not much on the Knox GOPs desperate efforts to keep term limit disqualified candidates ON the ballot, though (yeah, yeah, I know there are a couple of Democrats, too, so save your e-mails).
So anyway, instead of writing all that, I added some new links to the "Local Links" section over there on the right. Been meaning to do that for a while, and finally got around to it.
And instead of writing anything else, I'll refer you to some other stuff you may find interesting.
That ought to keep you entertained at work for a while.
Oh, one more thing. That last item reminds me of this ridiculous anti-gay marriage amendment and the pathetic GOP wedge issue GOTV pandering (haven't they been to that well one too many times already?). Democrats need to take a page from their playbook and run on a unified platform of a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing free sex, drugs, and rock and roll for all Americans.
OK, then.
*TCA 8-8-102: The original notarized verification form from the peace officer standards and training commission shall be filed by the peace officer standards and training commission with the county election commission by the withdrawal deadline. If the peace officer standards and training commission has not certified to the county election commission by the withdrawal deadline a person seeking to qualify as a candidate for the office of sheriff as meeting the qualifications as provided for in this section, such person's name shall not appear on the ballot.

Now, that's just uncalled for. But I did tell you at the knoxviews gathering that, so far, I was leaning toward Feingold in 08. Too bad he has the abysmal incumbent protection act hanging over his head.
I read this article to my wife this morning and we both agreed it was first misleading simply due to the fact that it implies Tyree is unqualified actually to be a Sheriff - that his credentials as a law enforcement officer don't match up to the job requirements of sheriff. Which, being an elected position, doesn't really have any "job requirements" that I know of.
Then when you read on into the story it says, as mentioned, that it's all hinging on paperwork - which really has nothing to do with how Tyree might be qualified to actually run the office.
But the damage is done - if he's kept on the ballot, the public now has another perception in place that he can't actually do the job.

Good point. You are right, it was a misleading headline. And trying to argue or even suggest that a former cop, safety director (essentially police chief) and mayor isn't qualified for the job would be ridiculous. But people might only remember that headline, and as you say the damage is done.
One note, though. Although the Sheriff is elected, he is a paid law enforcement officer and subject to the POST (police officer standards and training) certification and there are special requirements for the job spelled out in state and local law. (Not sure if being able to pilot a helicopter is one or not.)
P.S. For anyone wondering what we're talking about, the top of the page headline as it appears in the print edition:
GOP head: Tyree not qualified
The sub-head mentions "late filing", but the first paragraphs ends with "questions about his qualifications."
Thanks for the clarification on the requirements and certification. Do those type of requirements exist for other elected positions such as Mayor, County Commissioner/City Council, etc?

Yeah, there are some general requirements such as being a citizen, certain age, high school graduate, not a felon, etc., but for sheriff there are additional qualifications involving mental fitness and psychological exams, good moral character, etc., and the POST certification which I am not familiar with but assume includes some police work related training and experience.
I am one busy camper in San Francisco. I would move here if I could! I found a charming, small 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath apartment in an older building 7 blocks away from the marina area for a surprisingly cheap $3250 a month- that is rent not mortgage. Naturally at that price one would not expect parking or utilities!
Thanks for the link. A more complete representation of my pics is on my Flickr page.
It was Sunday. I did fine. The water was cold and rough, the bike very hilly and rough, the run was very hilly and tough. I finished 20 seconds or so behind my training partner, after we see-sawed throughout the morning. We went under 3 hours. That was probably the toughest non-ironman course I have done. Of course I spent the previous days walking all over SF instead of resting up, but I am more interested in seeing the city than worrying about my race time. I am getting a little old, and have lost a few steps as well. I will try and blog the race tonight. Eventually, a finishing video of me will be online. I will post a link whenit is there. My results. (Rankings not yet posted) From what I can tell off the results without the time trial starting difference subtracted, I was in the top 400 out of 1600. I used to be able to do top 10%, but this is an international quality race, and I am old!
Swimming 55 degree water is something else! Wetsuit and all, it had an effect on me!

Wow, looks like GTTim has been busy. I appreciate, or rather don't appreciate the bicycle cemetery pictures. But I understand they do have a lot of cyclists out there.

It's my understanding that he missed the February deadline to get on the primary ballot. His write-in candidacy allowed him to get qualified in plenty of time for the August ballot.

I notice that other than a GED or a high school diploma (and no criminal record) just about anyone can be the High Sheriff -- now that is surely a hallmark of excellence!

Can't we all just get a long gun?

CONFIRMED! SayUncle is a flaming liberal!
Anyone who opposes the assault weapons ban and the PATRIOT act is at least worthy of consideration.
