Knox Co. Dem chair Gloria Johnson (left) goes over the program
Area Democrats turned out in large numbers for the Knox County Democratic Party Truman Day event at the Knoxville Zoo last night. We estimate attendance at approx. 300 to 400 people. Candidates for Governor, state House and Senate, and Knoxville City Council were there, along with Tennessee Democratic Party chair Chip Forrester and Knox County Democratic Party chair Gloria Johnson and crew. The venue made for an informal, relaxed setting and there was good food and good conversation.
Three candidates for Governor spoke, and each brings a little something different to the table.
Kim McMillan brings her experience as a legislator and her work in the Governor's office as a cabinet member. As an educator, improving the state's education is a top priority, and she would also focus on making sure everyone in the state has access to affordable health care.
State Sen. Roy Herron brings his legislative experience, and a promise to push back against Republican claims that Democrats don't value faith and family. His top priorities are "jobs, jobs, jobs," and to grow and keep them we need "education, education, education."
Mike McWherter brings his leadership experience as an independent business owner, plus his family name and the counsel of his father and popular former governor Ned Ray McWherter. He promises effective fiscal management in the style of Gov. Phil Bredesen.
Including Ward Cammack and Jim Kyle (who did not attend), Tennessee Democrats have lined up a strong field of candidates, each with unique qualifications and experience. But it will be a long row to hoe running against the Haslam political machine in the general, and Democrats have a crowded field competing for limited campaign dollars. At some point it might be in their best interest to narrow the field a little.
Paula Flowers, candidate for the 3rd Congressional seat being vacated by Zach Wamp, also spoke. She has the qualifications and experience to be a formidable contender. Chip Forrester said he can't wait for Paula Flowers v. Robin Smith in the general election. Democrats have a great opportunity to flip this seat in the House.
Tim Burchett's departure from the State Senate to run for Knox County Mayor opens up some other possibilities. Rep. Stacey Campfield has said he will run for Burchett's Senate seat, so that creates opportunities for Democrats in the 18th State House district and the 7th Senate district.
Randy Walker will take on Campfield in the State Senate race, and Sam Alexander will run for Campfield's State House seat. Both Democrats were there and were introduced to applause and encouragement from the crowd.
Last but not least, here's a scoop: Chip Forrester promised to bring back the bow tie when Democrats take back the statehouse.

We got a bit of time on Kim
We got a bit of time on Kim McMillan's schedule when she was in town. You can see her on Inside Tennessee this Sunday. Should be up on our dot-com by noon or so Monday.

that's one of the most ridiculous concepts being sold to the public by politicians these days.
