Announcement: Knoxville City Council Workshop, re. Resolution to prohibit handguns in public parks and other public places, Thursday, August 20, 2009, 5:00 pm, Main Assembly Room of the City-County Building, 400 Main Street.

Maybe they will discuss the ordinance found in the current City Code of Ordinances, Article III, Section 20, chapter 60 paragraph (7) which says no person in a public park "shall use, carry or possess firearms of any description, air rifles, spring guns, bows and arrows, slings or any other form of weapon potentially inimical to wildlife and dangerous to human safety, any instrument that can be loaded with and fire blank cartridges, or any kind of trapping device."

So, they'll be meeting to

So, they'll be meeting to discuss changing the current law to intitiate allowing guns in parks in the city. I wonder when the current law was enacted and why. What has changed since then that the city wants to change it? Is this a message to stay away? Are Knoxville parks so dangerous that they need to encourage citizens to get hcp's to enjoy the parks?

The current law is being

The current law is being superceded by the new state law allowing guns in public parks. The state law kicks in unless a city or county decides to opt out.

I see no reason to change what has been working. But we'll see how scared City Council is of the gun lobby.

As for the administration, Parks & Rec guy Joe Walsh has been quite vocal in supporting the ban. Haslam has - predictably - been trying to dodge the issue as much as possible.

I thought ordinance passed

I thought ordinances passed before a certain date were automatically grandfathered in or something?

That's how it worked in

That's how it worked in Nashville.

Nashville's law director says the city doesn't have to vote to ban guns in parks because it already did so in 1966.
