I don't know any of the district 3 folks, and the only district 1 name I'm familiar with is Steve Dupree's brother.

Anybody got more info?

A quick google search (name

A quick google search (name and Knoxville, TN) on District 3 candidates resulted in no information about Joel Bond, Gerry Holman or Joshua Nelson.

Brenda Palmer, otoh, was a TN dem delegate in 2008, was on Hilary Clinton's steering committee, and was (is?)a city alternate on the Tax Equalization Board. That's assuming it's the same Brenda Palmer.

That's about all I could find, and I know nothing about any of these people. Sad thing is, I dont expect any of them to really get their name out there for the independents in their district.

I was also curious to learn

I was also curious to learn more about some of the candidates, so I started a little project to see how much effort any of them have put so far (4+ hours into the campaign season) to get their names and platforms out to the public via commonly used internet/social media tools. I've written one post about it so far, but hope to follow up with more later.

The Plan

GIve them some time. I know that one only decided yesterday to get in the race, and I suspect he wasn't the only one.

I'm sure that we'll see more developments from the candidates as the race goes on. As I mentioned in the comments over on my blog entry, I didn't expect to see 100% participation just four hours after the deadline. The point of yesterday's quick and dirty experiment was to discover which, if any, of the candidates had already established some sort of online presence for "Day 1."

I plan to follow along on the digital campaign trail for the duration of the campaign and write about how candidates incorporate (or don't) some of the techniques and technology from the 2008 national campaigns into their local races. When you consider that much of it can be done with an investment only in human capital rather than actual campaign dollars, it seems like a natural vein for traditionally underfunded local campaigns to mine.

A key to any marketing

A key to any marketing campaign is to know your audience. I wonder if there is any analysis of the districts here to determine the relevance of new techniques and technologies, especially Facebook and Twitter.

I do not know the answer. I suppose, though, that if a campaign is under funded then it could be beneficial to use any new, free methods to get your name known.

Hey, thanks for that. I knew

Hey, thanks for that. I knew about the Ray Abbas site and vaguely recall that Nick Pavlis had one. Was meaning to go look for others but having done that so many times before I'm a little weary of it. It shouldn't be so hard.

I'm hoping to write about it

I'm hoping to write about it frequently during the campaign and see if anyone tries to make social media an integral part of their campaign strategy (as the Obama campaign did so successfully in '08). My personal theory is that, as successful as it was on a national campaign, it's really a strategy that is ideally suited for a local campaign.

We'll see how it goes.

David Dupree in the 6th

David Dupree in the 6th district is indeed my little brother and the candidate that I will support in that race. He is educated, smart and involved and he has me for an advisor. David is a lawyer but you really should not hold that against him. He is a graduate of Catholic High school (class of '77?). He and I run in different circles but between the two of us, it is hard to find a place you can guarantee one of us will not show up or at least be known.

Duane Grieve, District 2 is an architect and is interested in things urban. His firm did the KUB/Millers building but Duane has been involved in sustainable development and reasonable reuse of the built environment for quite some time. It is hard to see him as other than an excellent choice.

The spouse just met Robert

The spouse just met Robert Marlino last night. He is an architect, interesed in urban design and is a member of the Congress for New Urbanism (cue #9). He is a member of Knox Heritage and has been very active on their Vintage Homes Committee.

He is also very interested in transportation issues, which impressed the spouse since that is one of his big things. He serves on City Council's Transportation and Mobility Committee (Marlino, not the spouse).

He lived in Old North before moving to south Knoxville about 4 years ago.

Anyway, I am looking forward to learning more about him.

True and as I've said the

True and as I've said the various social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, et al) are not in and of themselves a strategy. They are merely tools in an overall strategy.

I'm not sure why including online resources for fundraising, volunteer recruitment, message broadcasting, get out the vote initiatives, and other campaign activities, wouldn't be relevant in any district.
