A friend stopped by his neighborhood market the other day and the guy at the register handed him this "report".

It says there is a government plot to disrupt our economy and confiscate all private guns by Sept. 2009 so the U.S. can join the New World Order and adopt a global currency. President Obama was to seal the deal at the G20 summit in London. The back page lists several websites you should check out for more information "while you still can."

Googling the money quote leads to the deep dark underbelly of the vast conspiracy theory interwebs where the "report" and others like it are frequently quoted. Further googling as to the source reveals it was produced by variously a) a Russian intelligence agent, b) a CIA disinformation operation, or c) a computer programmer/author hyping a book.

All of this would be hilarious if a) there weren't so many people who actually take this stuff seriously, b) some of them are so convinced that they believe customers at their neighborhood market need to be warned about it, and c) it triggers the seriously paranoid/delusional types to act on it.

Idiots with guns

That's democracy, I guess.

I fear conspiracy theorists more than I do gunowners. Most gunowners aren't stupid enough to believe in fringe conspiracies. Most are rational, law-abiding people.

Conspiracy theorists are narcissistic thugs and mental midgets who can't wrap their little minds around a complex world. And that goes for conspiracy theorists on the left and the right.

September is not that far

September is not that far away, so I consider this a good thing, since they will quickly be proven wrong.

I'm sure they're still

I'm sure they're still dining on C rations and smoked hams that they had stockpiled in advance of Y2K.

Unfortunately not new

I've been getting that conspiracy line since way before last year's election, mostly from otherwise nice and sane-seeming elderly Republican friends down in Texas. I tried engaging some in discourse about it, but quickly decided it was better to ignore them when their emails take a turn for the loopy.

Anyone who comes up with a good link that could help these well-meaning folks, please let me know.

Good luck

You can't. You try to point out well-respected sites like snopes and factcheck, and they just call those "liberal" and continue to believe the same foolishness.

Voting is like driving. If you want to go backwards, select R. If you want to go forward, select D.

MDB's picture

Oh, really?

The document refers to Secretary of State "Charles Shultz" under "Regan".

Well, either they're thinking of Reagan's SecState George Schultz or Charles "Sparky" Schulz, who gave the world Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

Voting is like driving. If you want to go backwards, select R. If you want to go forward, select D.

Seems like a bit of cognitive dissonance.....some of them are comparing Obama to Hitler, and some of them are saying Hitler was a good guy. These people are nuts.

The far left has its

The far left has its paranoid fantasies as well. One of the biggest is the notion that crimes involving guns are spiraling out of control. FBI statistics do not show such an increase.

That's my whole point. Both

That's my whole point. Both sides of the issue are so entangled in their own rhetoric that it's hard to tell what the truth is.

I'm afraid economic hard

I'm afraid economic hard times may push even more of these crazies over the edge. For some, it won't take much of a bump.

Fair and balanced so who knows what's right/wrong anymore?

That's my whole point. Both sides of the issue are so entangled in their own rhetoric that it's hard to tell what the truth is.

Ah, there it is. Both sides do it. So these whackjobs are no worse than all those leftist peaceniks who destroy freedom by imposing socialism. Something like that?

Jon Stewart sez it best...

"I think you are confusing tyranny with LOSING.."

(link...)

"..[being on the losing side] is supposed to taste like a sh** taco!"

But it IS a dangerous trend, and there are nutcases out there that WILL be moved to violence.

I should note on this page...

2. We will NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people

3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or to subject them to military tribunal.

Um.. where have you guys been for the last 8 years?!!!?!?!?!?!?
