Gene Patterson reminisces on streaking ca. 1974. (Yes, we remember the "couple on the bull" incident.)

Ah, yes. Streaking... I was
Ah, yes. Streaking... I was in town then. I wonder why I don't remember the 5,000 students streaking :) As I've said before, like the Allman Bros., would someone let me know what I did between 1970 and 1975? Some of it is quite fuzzy.
We had just moved to
We had just moved to Knoxville a few months before this, and I remember listening to WROL radio (at 1490 AM -- FM hadn't caught on yet) whose jocks were doing live reports on the Strip strippers. It's one of those things I regret -- not driving down to see it in person.
WooHoo
The "couple on the bull" and the whole street party surrounding them is permanently etched on my brain. Who says drugs kill brain cells? There's nothing wrong with me with me with me... or... maybe not.
I also recall certain unnamed nekkid revelers running across the hoods, then roofs, then trunk lids, of bumper-to-bumper gridlocked cars in a continuous line on Cumberland. Too bad the camcorder wasn't available then! Many were gathered on the roof of the old Monday hotel and it was much like a street scene in New Orleans at Mardi Gras, with the girls pulling up their tops, followed by massive shouting, clapping, whistling, rowdy responses from the grateful males... in particular, me!!!
WOW MAN! WHAT A TRIP!
I remember the streaking
I remember the streaking craze. I knew a group that did their damage loaded atop an old fire truck cruising Cumberland. Later I wondered if streaking happened through the subconsciousness of the nation celebrating the end of the Vietnam war. Just as the war may have brought about the age of hippies.
I was nine in 1974, but was
I was nine in 1974, but was completely fascinated with streaking. Good times, and nakedness without the drama.
The first shock and awe experience of my life. :)

Sigh...
You all make me wish I had been at UT ten-fifteen years earlier.
During my days there (1984-1989), the biggest thing to happen on the Strip was either Ronald Reagan's visit1 or a set of moving goalposts.
To be fair, being a more than a little nerdish electrical engineering major, I probably would have been studying instead of streaking, but still...
1 For which our always vigilant campus police force forgot to shut down the pedestrian bridge over Cumberland Avenue, and the motorcade passed directly under it. The Secret Service was reportedly more than a bit unhappy.
Voting is like driving. If you want to go backwards, select R. If you want to go forward, select D.
streakers
There was a very attractive streaker who turned cartwheels when some street preachers were preaching on the UC sidewalk--in 2003. That was wild since it was during the same month we had war protests at UT.
Streaking
Randy -- I guess you noticed I didn't mention whether I actually took part in the streaking activity... I'm a firm believer in the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.. ha.
