Classy. Who approved that sign?

Cute. There are real issues in this race.

The Alcoa school board has not adequately responded to numerous instances of unequal treatment of non-white students and in fact rushed its reappointment of the superintendent of schools to before the November election. Parents and teachers are hesitant to speak up for fear of retaliation.

If you vote in Alcoa, pay attention!

The person with the ridiculous sign is running for an open seat on the Alcoa School Board. Not sure I would want that person's input if he can't take education seriously. I also feel one of the other candidates is not qualified to be on the school board. I cannot mention that person's name. That leaves two other candidates not currently on the school board.

I did find two article in The Daily Times regarding the issues you mention. I still don't know that much. Obviously there are a few unhappy parents. I always thought Alcoa schools did a good job. I could be wrong. The schools are very diversified with a lot of minorities.

I have attended two school board meetings and

listened to the statements by parents of students who believe they have been treated differently because they are not white and that certain teachers and administrators do not seem ready to work in a diverse system.

The board and the superintendent do not appear at the meetings to think there is an issue and organized a big crowd of teachers and parents to show up and essentially refute the idea that there are issues that need attention.

I do not know details. I know that rushing the reappointment of the superintendent before the election is not a sign of the board taking any of these matters very seriously.

It can be a very good system and still need to be better.

No open seats

There are no open seats in the Alcoa School Board race. Three current board members are seeking re-election.

I think this sign is awesome. And is not boring like all the others.

Classy sign

This sign has to be the best sign that has ever been put up. Someone knows a little about marketing it looks like.

Calculated Sabotage

Looking closer at the picture, it appears to be a white pick-up truck...very similar to the Chairman of the Alcoa School Board's truck. How ironic! This picture was posted as a distraction. The current school ALCOA School Board Members need to be removed and replaced with new Members who actually care about all students and not their personal agendas. Many candidates signs are being stolen in Alcoa, I wouldn't be surprised if it were current school Board Members sabotaging the new candidates in this election. WAKE UP ALCOA RESIDENTS. REMOVE THE BOOGERS AND SLIME. We need honest, caring and school board members with INTEGRITY.

Steven Rodgers's picture

What are you willing to pay attention to?

I'm certainly not opposed to humor, but not in the context of ignoring valid concerns of how low-income, ELL, and students of color are being treated. Considering the amount of talk from people at school board meetings about how they "don't see color", how can we be surprised that those issues of color are being suppressed? To clarify, saying you don't see color also says you don't acknowledge the experiences someone has undergone based on their skin color; in other words, denying racism exists anywhere. I'm sure those people are well meaning, but they don't realize what message they are conveying, and THAT is something having the right people on the school board can fix.

bizgrrl's picture

In my research I have found

In my research I have found no information on the candidates for school board that are not incumbents, Brewster, Garcia, and Griffin, except for Bledsoe, who is currently a city commissioner. There is no way I'm going to vote for the unknown.

Maybe the people who are having a problem with the school system should get a spokesperson to be a champion for their issues. Someone who doesn't say booger in their promotional materials. Someone who can explain and clearly document any problems.

Don't get me wrong, I know Alcoa is not perfect. I've had my own issues with the city commission, but I worked hard to provide a good case and got a lot of people in the community to work together. Haven't always gotten the desired result but we did a couple of times.

Booger

Why is the word booger so offensive to you?
It's humor, it a joke, and a break from the norm. There is almost 400 signs out everywhere and honestly people are not looking at them because they are everywhere. The booger has a lot of people laughing and enjoying some good humor. I would hate to think our forefathers didn't listen to Einstein because he used a word, or made a grammatical error........

Was it over when the Germans bombed Valley Forge? Hell no!

When it comes to the

When it comes to the education for our children I do not find any humor in the word "booger". On the contrary, it is insulting every citizen in Alcoa saying that they are booger pickers instead of paying attention to the seriousness in our education of our children. The education MUST be taken seriously when it is INDEED our children's FUTURE!

Joe smith's picture

The current school board

The current school board didn't take it serious when they prematurely voted to renew his contract when they had heard rumors a couple people running was wanting to get rid of Dr Bell. They went ahead and pushed it thru. Putting personal agenda ahead of the kids....and the school system. They should have waited and let the new board decide. Now I doubt the new board will just fire him but it can be done, costing the system $450k +. Now we're they being serious enough for you? I mean I bet if they would have to foot the bill if it happened they would have never voted to renew it. But hey they are spending the systems money. It's just not good to make decisions based on rumors and out of haste. I feel they are long over due to be replaced. They didn't take the warrior parent serious??? And all they wanted was to be heard and have some communication, some one to listen. I'm sure there is a lot more to be heard and will come to the surface one way or the other. The warriors are not going away anytime soon.

At each of the two recent school board meetings, there have been articulate spokespeople for the group and they have not been the boogerman.

On a side note, it seems the currently reported problems have been simmering for a while:

The article to which you reference does not indicate the currently reported problems have been simmering for a while at all. You are referencing something not at all related to Alcoa City Schools.

The article is primarily about Blount County Schools and Maryville City Schools.

Most of Blount County's relatively small minority population (2.9% black and 94.7% white compared to 16.4% black and 80.2% white statewide), resides in a small area within the city of Alcoa. Approx. 58% of the county's black high school students attend Alcoa High School (30% black and 70% white),

Given those statistics, you'd think the recent racial tensions began in Alcoa.

You'd be wrong.

A suggestion to anyone using Facebook when running for public office, they should make the Facebook pages completely public for voters who do not use Facebook.
