"The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar" popped up on my playlist.

It made me think I should post another favorite opening lyrics discussion.

Then I found the original discussion of this topic from 2013. It will never be topped:

Great opening lyrics

Good times.

Heh. Looks like I popped up early in that thread with some kewel (but kinda obscure) opening lyrics. Lyle Lovett and Betty's kid brother John Bean were from different eras, but were kindred spirits, nonetheless.

In the deep, dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
"You will never leave Harlan alive"

RB Morris: Caught a train

RB Morris:

Caught a train from Alexandria
Just a broken man in flight
Running scared with his devils
Saying prayers all through the night
Oh but mercy can't find him
Not in the shadows where he calls
Forsaking all his better angels

That's how every empire falls

I met you on a midway at a fair last year
And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear

You were playing on the horses, you were playing on the guitar strings
You were playing like a devil wearing wings, wearing wings

You looked so grand wearing wings
Do you tape them to your shoulders just to sing

Allman Brothers

Well, I've got to run to keep from hiding
And I'm bound to keep on riding
And I've got one more silver dollar
But I'm not gonna let them catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider

Somehow, I seem to have

Somehow, I seem to have missed the original thread. So here's a trio to make up for it a bit.

I found a picture
of your smiling face
bringing old memories
that I had locked away
the burden of anger
of a heart filled with pain
was finally lifted
and I smiled at you again

Eva Cassidy - Time is a Healer

He looked down into her brown eyes,
Said, " Say a prayer for me."
She threw her arms around him,
Whispered, "God will keep us free."
And they could hear the riders comin',
He said, "This is my last fight.
If they take me back to Texas,
They won't take me back alive.

Ray Charles - Seven Spanish Angels

Well, hello there
My it's been a long, long time
How am I doin'?
Oh, I guess that I'm doin' fine
It's been so long now but it seems now
That it was only yesterday
Gee, ain't it funny how time slips away
How's your new love
I hope that he's doin' fine
I heard you told him that you'd love him till the end of time
Now that's the same thing that you told me, seems like just the other day
Gee, ain't funny how time slips away

Willie Nelson (and thousands of others) - Funny How Time Slips Away

I used to spend my nights out in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I've known
But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottom
And brought me back from being too far gone
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time

Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey (but I am linking to a kewl cover of it)

I don't want to die like James Agee
In the back of a taxi on the run

Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
