Nearly 9,000 pediatric deaths were attributed to opioids from 1999 through 2016, according to a report published Friday in the journal JAMA Network Open. During that 18-year span, the mortality rate for youth due to opioid poisonings nearly tripled.

A court ruling Monday in Massachusetts will expose details about one of America's richest families and their connection to the nation's opioid crisis.

The Sacklers and members of their company Purdue Pharma have been named in a lawsuit that accuses them of profiting from the opioid crisis by aggressively marketing OxyContin, claims denied by attorneys for the family and Purdue.

But a copy of a confidential Justice Department report shows that federal prosecutors investigating the company found that Purdue Pharma knew about “significant” abuse of OxyContin in the first years after the drug’s introduction in 1996 and concealed that information.

I just lost another friend to addiction last week. Pills, opioids, were his drug of choice. Followed by beer, Red Bull, hard liquor and antidepressants. I find it ironic that, while it's the opium that sets the hook, it's the massive doses of acetaminophen and ibuprofen that really attack the liver, kidneys and pancreas. I believe it's wholly appropriate to charge Marsha Blackburn, as well as anyone profiting off the abuse of these drugs with murder in the first degree, as these are nothing more than murder for payment.

Fentanyl deaths skyrocketed more than 1,000% over six years

Beginning in 2014, though, fentanyl-related deaths began to double each year. In 2014, fentanyl was involved in 4,223 deaths. In 2015, it was 8,251 deaths. And in 2016, fentanyl-related deaths had jumped to 18,335.
