None of the mayoral candidates received enough votes to become mayor. On Sept. 12, 2019, there will be a runoff between the two top candidates.

And, the two top candidates are John Cooper and David Briley. David Briley is the current mayor. He took over after Mayor Megan Barry had to resign last year.

Nashville's funny. They are growing by leaps and bounds. But, somehow it doesn't appear they are changing.

Both of these mayoral candidates are members of famously political families in the Nashville area.

David Briley’s grandfather, Beverly Briley, was the consolidated Metro government’s first mayor (1963 to 1975). Prior to that he was a Davidson County judge (1950 to 1963). David Briley's brother, Rob Briley, served ten years as a representative in the Tennessee General Assembly.

John Cooper’s father, Prentice Cooper, was the governor of Tennessee from 1939 to 1945. John Cooper's brother, Jim Cooper, is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (2003-present).
