This is right down the street from me. I'd rather not see anything man-made sticking up on that ridge. I enjoy the natural skyscape. Are large crossses considered signs?

Those crosses are tacky.
Those crosses are tacky. Very trailer-esque, if you ask me.
"Ain't that what the Lord
"Ain't that what the Lord would say?"
I'm imagining quite a different comment.
Giant cross
I, too, believe that the money spent on these crosses would be better served helping the community. I read somewhere there's a pastor who uses the church's money to help his people get rid of their debt, allowing them to live better, and to have more money to help others. Now THAT's a program to get behind, instead of wasting it on an eyesore on a landscape. I doubt Jesus would care about having a giant cross obscuring the view, but I bet he'd really like to see more people caring about each other, lending a hand to the poor, and feeding them instead of creating a perch for birds to poop on.
Please tell me that this has
Please tell me that this has to be approved by city council, zoning etc...before the moron can start building it...
It helps the poor!
In the true "christian" spirit, erecting expensive and ugly giant crosses everywhere promotes the gospel of Jesus. It feeds the poor, clothes the naked, sets the prisoner free, and cures gout.
Or it could be that "do not do as the Pharisees do by publicly and loudly proclaiming but go to a quiet place and pray" was Jesus just kidding around and didn't really mean it. Oops, I'm getting the Gospel mixed up with good old churchianity christianism.
Never mind then.
Notice WATE made sure to include contact information where one could "help Knoxville get a cross"? How thoughtful.
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."
Hunter S. Thompson
It helps the porn!
Oh, let's not get into the message, it's the appearance that counts. Remember Billy Crystal's Fernando?; "It's better to look good, than to feel good."
Noticed that too. Maybe if the local mosque decides they want to put up 100ft minarets, WATE will promote that also. I'm sure they will be a little less thoughtful.
The funny part is how some see the cross in Campbell Co. I know a couple who likes the movies they watch to come from the "back room" of the video store.
They told me one of their favorite places was the adult store up I-75 next to the "big cross". I wonder if dude knows his cross is a landmark for porn.
I've come around to deciding
I've come around to deciding that the cross is a silly logo for christians anyway. It certainly didn't work for Jesus, and perpetuates the charade.
I guess these folk are stuck on the program that you can only go to heaven by dying, instead of living a good life.
I've been rather put off by
I've been rather put off by the local TV station's in general because they seem so Christianity oriented. I don't think they understand that while respectful to religion is one thing, a mass media organization ought to give both sides.

"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." ~Kurt Vonnegut
Nah, I can't go that far.
Given the region in which we live, and given that local TV stations are competing for market share, I can't fault them for a little Christian boosterism. Religion makes up a big part of an awful lot of people's lives in these here parts, and I don't fault our local fourth estate for reporting on the various programs and goings on of the local churches.
I don't even object to massive displays of Christianity on prominent points. I've seen the "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio, high up on Corcovado, and was duly impressed with it as a magnificent work of art and skill. I'm not quite so keen about enormous crosses that appear to be clad in cheap vinyl siding.
On the other hand, if someone was to paint the water tower to look even more like the face of the Tin Man, maybe add a lion and scarecrow next to it... you've got yourself a genuine tourist attraction that would be the envy of Pigeon Forge!
What would be the problem
What would be the problem with saying something about zoning ordinances and giving the appropriate contact info along with, if you want to help info?
Sorry. I'm a Christian, but I'm also a recovering journalist and I am offended by the appearance of a Christian news department.

Symbols
Just imagine how these people would howl if some hedonistic pagan set up a huge plastic phallic symbol along I-40. What is the difference?
graven images...idolatry. I
graven images...idolatry. I prefer to witness the hand of God in nature and scenic vistas, not aluminum and steel.
I don't get it...
What's your Point? I mean, there might be some who are offended by a giant galvalume cross, but who could find fault with a huge...Oh, wait...
Plastic?
Sorry, never mind...
Money wisely spent?
If each of these eyesores cost $60,000, why not prove your love of Christ by donating that money to a Habitat house? Or give it to Volunteer Ministries? What the...?
Josh, you're obviously
Josh, you're obviously begging the question, but I'll bite: because it is easier to act like a Christian than to truly be a Christian. Surely you're not suggesting that we don't need more antennas to God, instead of more service to humanity? These antennas are important...my only concern is how folks like this guy will be able to kiss that cross when it is so high in the air.
I seem to remember when the
I seem to remember when the Sevier County cross was going up the figure quoted was more like $100,000. Whichever it is, like you say it could be put to much better use.
Saw you on the news, Carole!
Hear, hear, Carole! I was so excited to see you on the 11:00 news.
Honestly.....I do not see
Honestly.....I do not see what everybody's problem is. I mean if a person wants to put something on their own property and have abided by the rules and regulations then what right do any of us have to complain. Let me remind you in case you forgot....This is AMERICA ....you know, land of the FREE! If this church/community wants their cross then they should have their cross. To them is is a representation of who they are!
There are many rules and
There are many rules and laws regarding what can be put on your property. In many communities you can't have a liquor store, strip joint, or adult book/video store within so many feet of a church. So, what.
Way out of Perspective
You know.....all of you are so far out of pespective. If you have read or listened to the media there is something that is very clear! This church is not forsaking it's Good Samaritan responcibilities just to build a cross. It is very clear that this is a community effort just using a church as a refrence point. I mean the news interviwed many people in the community and it sounds to me like everybody over there likes the idea. Go ahead community, be who you are, go build your cross and may God bless it!!!
$180,000
Each cross is estimated to cost $60,000. Three would be $180,000. There are invariably cost overruns, so let's say $200,000.
I don't have time to do heavy research. But that's a lot of money that could be used for so very many things that underemployed and unemployed families could use. Food, school supplies, bus passes, coats, utilities.....toiletries, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies.......medicine, doctor co-pays, dental care......
Or six Habitat for Humanities homes.
That's just off the top of my head as what appears to be the flu moves in with a pounding headache.

Two thoughts: 1. So
Two thoughts:
1. So Anonymous, you'd be ok if someone wanted to build a towering Satanic symbol over your community, as long as it was on their own property?
2. As a Christian myself, I don't approve of Golden Calfs (calves?). This practice of building these huge monoliths is, in my opinion, idolatry.
Wow
rocketsquirrel ..... i find it hard to believe that you are a Christian with such a comment. If a person wants to build something and their proprty and abides by the guidelines set by the laws of the land....what can I say? I may not approve of it....but it is there right! But to say that it is idolotry (the cross idolotry). Come on rocketsquirrel, You may need to read I Corinthians 1:18 (you say you're a Christian). It says, "Preaching of the CROSS is to them that perish (unbelievers) foolishness; but unto us which are SAVED it (the CROSS) is the POWER of God." Can't be no more simple then that. Wow....you say Idolotry...a cross!
anonymous, are you at all
anonymous,
are you at all familiar with the Protestant reformation, the selling of indulgences, and iconoclasm (worship of icons)?
Second Commandment: "Thou shall have no other gods before me." (Exod. 20:4-6).
A cross is an icon. Fervent believers sometimes get things out of hand, just as they did in the 16th century, and start putting the icons ahead of faith.
And I'm sorry, but if you think that God needs to manifest his power through a 100 foot vinyl and aluminum icon out on the Interstate...well, God help you.
Actually they are not
Actually they are not talking about the piece of wood itself, but of the one who was hung on it (Jesus Christ) because if the wood itself was the word of God we would all worship trees or planks of wood.
The wood didn't preach anything. Jesus did.
Read Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”
So a giant "tree" such as that one the gentleman from the church wants to put up is a cursed symbol.
Rocketsquirrel seems on the money to me.
On another note, why do they need this cross? So people can find the church? If a person cannot find a baptist church in East Tennessee then they are not looking hard. There are 12 on the way home from my work to my house. (that is just Baptist churches, not mentioning any other religions) I think this is a boost so that church can get more attention (and I don't mean in a good way) I mean in the way "Hey look at my church, its better than yours because we have a huge expensive sign"
Same Same
Just to play devil's advocate (so to speak) for a moment, let's not forget that people have been erecting giant symbols of worship since their have been people. Imposing imagery is what it's supposed to be. It's as much a part of human nature as anything.
And the effort that has gone into each and every one could have been spent on humanity efforts. There is nothing new there either.
~m.
Point taken. However, I
Point taken. However, I think that there are already plenty of crosses in this area. It's near impossible to turn one way or the other without seeing one. Plus, I honestly believe that the beauty of nature is something that we in East Tennessee have already done too much to destroy.

Got to admit...
I see your point. Rheims Cathedral, Notre Dame, St. Paul's, Westminster Abby, even that gigantic glass church in Anaheim... all imposing and monumental. They are also gorgeous, magnicient examples of human design and engineering in the field of architecture. Then you have Michelangelo's David and Pieta, Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Cristo de Concordia in Bolivia, all magnificent examples of Christian sculpture. Leaving Christianity and olden times behind, you have the Ushiku Daibutsu and Sendai Daikannon in Japan, Nanshan Haishang Guanyin in Hainan, China, and so forth. I'd be delighted to have something like any of these in my home town. Maybe the objection is that these big crosses are just so tacky and cheap looking?
Ultimately, art is in the eye of the beholder, though, isn't it? If the thing isn't violating any ordinances, the people who want to put it up have the right to do so. I recognize and agree with the folks who want to protect our ridgeline. It saddens me to see what's happened and is still happening in Sevier County. The burden, however, is upon those who feel that way to convince the majority to agree and demand protective action be taken by the appropriate legislative bodies. All the "feed the poor" type arguments might reinforce our own sense of self-righteousness, but they really don't address the central issue. If the big ugly cross is legal and has the necessary funding, they have the right to put it up.
Ultimately, art is in the

What would be your position if another house of worship wanted to erect 100ft minarets next to your neighborhood?
I don't really like taking things personal...
But just to clarify something I thought I'd made clear. I'm an atheist so I really don't care what magical invisible being your monument is a tribute to. I'm also a history and acheology buff, and the destruction of the ancient Buddhas by the Taliban was reprehensible. I hope that satisfies your curiosity.
What would be your position

I don't understand all the comments the same people are leaving over and over, I think this is a great thing for Knoxville on any level, The one in Pigeon Forge looks so pretty up on that hill , it just sparkles when the sun shines on it. Mr Potter ,they are pretty no matter what others say , go forward with what you want to do for the GLORY OF THE LORD, cause with out him giving our first breath of life not one of us would be on this earth today, and he can very easily take that breath away ,
This country needs to get back to christian basics as it was founded on in the first place. God bless each one of you on here anyways.
Martha you are so right
Martha you are so right ..... the crosses are beautiful. Peoples problem is that they are anti-God and anti-Christ and they do not even realize it. Many people in Knoxville may think that the Sun Sphere is ugly but it is there. Oh....and by the way this country was found on religious freedom (that is the ability to excercise your own respective religion) I think we have forgot that. This is not some pagan country that was founded by the lies of false religions. It is America (founded on the principles of God and his Word). Our forfathers, the puritans who came to this great country would be so dissappointed that we no loger allow people to excercise their rights of religion. We can waste our time argueing on here all we want but in the end.....God will have the final say whether He wants this cross or not!
the puritans who came to
we no loger allow people to excercise their rights of religion
Pardon the expression, but what the hell are you talking about?
martha you are so right
Amen , Amen, I think people do forget that no matter what they have to say about Mr Potter and his cross's God will have the final say,,, If its put up it's his will and if not then he has other plans.

I mean if a person wants to
Just because existing rules and regulations are satisfied, doesn't make it right with the majority or just plain right at all. One's rights start getting real iffy when they step on somebody else's. And all rights are not necessarily legal rights under law. As a Christian you should know that.
And if you are so wound up into God, why do you act like a King? A lot of people believe these eyesores desecrate God's creations. And many believe real Christians are more sensitive than you've ever shown to be.
Go back to the secular example of the water tower. Just because it may presently be legal doesn't make it right.
Anyway, thanks for not caring enough even to spell check. It really keeps your comments in perspective.
Next let us put up a giant
Next let us put up a giant golden calf. It really worked out for the Jews who used in their worship. God really loved it too....Are these really $60,000? Who makes these and why are they making such a killing in the name of Religion? I find it attrotious that they use Religion to make money. I wonder how they sleep at night?
It's not the message that's bad...
I must say ever since I saw the first one of these in Loudon county years ago, I think it's the ugliest thing to look at.
Don't get me wrong, the message is clear, and that's fine, but these things look cheap, tacky, and are a downright eyesore that blemishes the beauty of the surroundings.
The large cross at Wallace Memorial on Merchants, with the stained glass and all, is beautiful. It's noticeable, but not tacky, doesn't distract from the surroundings, and it pleasant to view.
These behemoths just look like they were put together with mobile home leftovers.
There are more enchanting ways of getting the message to the masses without having to make it an ugly distraction to the area.
BTW: The one that's in Jellico is right next to an adult bookstore. They've sparred back and forth for years about both the store and the cross up there.

WWJB...where would Jesus be?
WWJB...where would Jesus be? Under the cross, or in front of the adult bookstore?
And people wonder why less
And people wonder why less and less people are actively religious....they see their parishes and churches wasting money on giant crosses and chruches the size of the pentagon...i thought church was supposed to be about god and building a family out of the people attending your church....how can you possibly be close with the 1,000+ members of giant churhes. Do they think these crosses are a marketing ploy to attract more members? Because in reality most people don't care about these giant crosses because they are pointless. (maybe the members of said church get some pride out of this giant cross) but i am sure they could get more pride by building a house for a well deserving family or helping to rebuild in New Orleans....but hey whatever floats your boat. I just hope you can sleep at night after you pay the giant bill for the huge cross, and realize that money could have been better spent a number of different places
What does putting up or not
What does putting up or not putting up a giant cross have to do with freedom of religion in our country...and people can choose to beleive it what they want....just because someone believes in god and church does not mean that all have to beleive the same thing....some on here say our country was founded on religious freedom...that religious freedom also extends to those members in who society who choose to worship nothing...the crosses are ugly, plain and simple. there is no practical reason to build a 100 ft tall ugly piece of construction..thats not an attack on religion, you can worship whatever you would like in your house of worship, but if i wanted to put up a pagan symbol i am sure all you die hard christians would be up in arms....RELIGIOUS FREEDOM is the key....that means people are free to choose whatever religion they like...including not having one at all
Yeah because a company
Yeah because a company should do something for free just because its in the name of religion....thats ridiculous....when you are talking about a 100 foot structure, do you really not think that it is going to be expensive? But a construction company should just donate their time and money to build these ridiculous things....i have a great idea how to prevent these so called "bad" company's from making money off these things....its simple, DONT BUILD THEM... And trutfully what do these giant crosses have to do with religion. Is it the bigger the cross you have the more devoted you are to god...Are the small ones in the church not sufficient?
Good God
It's an army of straw men.

Cross issue
Love the comments. I don't really care either way but if Christ were killed with a gun rather than hung from a cross would they erect a huge gun? It seems so silly to dwell on the manner of death. I've always though we were supposed to focus on his teachings and his resurrection that brings us eternal life.
Very important point, Zanna
I couldn't agree more. Out with the bloody gore aspect and in with the striving to achieve enlightenment.
