The autumnal equinox arrives on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at 9:31 A.M.

After the autumnal equinox, the Sun begins to rise later and nightfall comes sooner. This ends with the December solstice, when days start to grow longer and nights shorter.

Incorrect Description

Bizgrrl seems to have the right idea, but the description of what happens on and after the autumnal equinox is way off. "[T]he Sun begins to rise later and the nightfall comes sooner" actually happens at the summer solstice. What happens at the fall equinox is that the process that BEGAN at the solstice has progressed to the point where the day is shorter than the night in the Northern Hemisphere.
