Clinton Highway
I voted at the Knox County early voting site at the Expo Center on Clinton Highway today. Wait was 30 minutes-plus. Most people I've ever seen there. Voting went quickly with short ballot; holdup was getting through the first station - checking address and verifying registration. Zero campaign workers at 2 p.m.
I am trying to decide how to
I am trying to decide how to vote on the Knoxville Charter Amendment 2. The ballot language is confusing. I do not favor at large seats or partisan council elections. Nothing I can do about the stupidity of those partisan elections or partisan school board elections but if I can vote to influence giving local districts more power in selecting leaders that represent the interests of their own district that would be good. Anybody have a better explanation for Charter Amendment 2?
Bill Lyons
(in reply to Mike Daugherty)
Bill Lyons explains:
Knoxville's Charter Amendment No. 2 asks voters if they want to keep district City Council members accountable to just districts or to the whole city.

(in reply to R. Neal)
Thanks, I was pretty sure I knew how I wanted to vote but the legal jargon used can make it a little less clear. The thing is that I might not be a genius but I do take my vote seriously and always want to make sure I understand my voting decision. Many people do not take the time to research the charter initiatives and either skip voting for them or vote uninformed. I suppose that could be intentional.
I hope voters are voting for
I hope voters are voting for Democrats that will focus on the real issues and do what they can to make life better for all Americans. Governor Lee and the Tennessee legislature need to do something asap about the leading killer of Tennesseans 18 and under. They need to to pass serious gun safety laws that save lives.
All gun owners should a background check. The legislature needs to make it illegal for anyone that has been diagnosed with a mental illness to own and carry a gun. They need to require gun safety classes and tests for gun owners. Any person convicted of domestic
violence should not own a gun. All assault weapons and bump stocks should be illegal.
The 2nd amendment does not prohibit restrictions on guns. If SCOTUS, rules that the use of firearms cannot be restricted, the states need to pass legislation amending the 2nd amendment to make it clear sensible gun laws are legal.
Confusing
I'm going to cancel Mike's vote because I want representation from all the council members.
I'm stuck with a councilman who only represents a small portion of my neighbors. Four new developments in my neighborhood and not one of them has been invited or encouraged to visit our group. Even Joe Hultquist who would have been happy to see my neighbors disappeared had enough respect for the process to invite the developer of City View to our neighborhood group.
Tommy Smith convened a "Task Force" to study my neighborhood and it has more representation from the bike walk advocates
(3) than actual residents (2).
Developers/real estate have 7 representatives. Latest thing is Smith didn't get the word out about a bza hearing Oct 15, and he has access to our email list with over a dozen members.
Sorry for the off topic rant but I couldn't open the Bill Lyons article.

(in reply to Up Goose Creek)
No hard feelings, my wife has canceled my vote a time or two. I do not want West Knoxville to be over represented by controlling at large seats.
I will admit our laws at the national, state, and local levels would better represent the interests of everybody if women controlled the legislation. Of course, there are more women than men in our country and hopefully on Nov. 5 they will flex their muscles.
Too many times in our past literacy tests, poll taxes, Gerrymandering and other methods have been used to keep black citizens without a voice. In representing our local, state, and national interests it is very important for minorities to be represented at least proportionally to their population in a district or state.
Of course, there are lots
(in reply to Mike Daugherty)
Of course, there are many stupid women that are terrible in representing the interests of the majority of people in the U.S. MTG and Marsha Blackburn have shown they are just as eat up with the dumbass as Tim Burchett. But as a rule, most women that have served at elected office are more thoughtful and logical and do a better job than most men. I hope the number of women elected to Congress increases this year and Kamala Harris becomes our first woman President. The majority of white male voters vote against the interests of most Americans and it is time white males stopped controlling the laws Congress passes.
Council
(in reply to Mike Daugherty)
Wondering where that came from in a discussion of City Council since at the moment our Council has a supermajority of women.
My first reaction is that your comment feels patronizing. Perhaps it has merit if women are less likely to enter politics for reasons of ego or ambition.

(in reply to Up Goose Creek)
Na, I am just stating my opinion. I am not going to apologize for being tech stupid and getting a little off topic. I think it is important for everybody to speak out against and resist Trump and the Maga folks. Since white males are the biggest supporters of the Trump bs, It is up to women and non white males to resist. You have a right to your opinion, but you sound a little arrogant and full of yourself in your judgement of me. My opinion is my opinion no matter who agrees. I try to be fair minded. I suppose you can interpret it any way you want I just think maybe you are over thinking this one. Your priorities are different than mine and like I said in previous post it does not matter that you canceled my vote. It does matter if you question my integrity. Maybe I have misjudged but I have read your posts in past and you appear to be a thoughtful person. I do not think you are being fair in your response to me.
Harris
(in reply to Mike Daugherty)
Harris 47!
Representation
When I am deciding my vote for district 6 I tend to vote for a Black candidate. Too many votes to say whether it's always or usually, but I want a Council that looks like Knoxville.
