Tennessee Medicaid Block Grant Waiver Amendment Approved by Federal Government

Tennessee is the first state in the nation to be granted approval for this type of block grant arrangement, which will result in an innovative, alternative financing arrangement for its Medicaid program and provide additional flexibilities relative to its administration.

"Today’s agreement represents a continuation of Tennessee’s commitment to innovate, lead and improve,” said Governor Bill Lee. “We have sought to fundamentally change an outdated and ineffective Medicaid financing system that incentivizes states to spend more taxpayer dollars rather than rewarding states for value, quality and efficiency."

State Democratic legislators

State Democratic legislators are urging President Joe Biden to rescind the Medicaid Block Grant Waiver that the Trump administration granted Tennessee earlier in January.
"Democrats behind the letter argue that Governor and Republican leadership in the state have proven to be, “Unable to handle the responsibility of being given more control over federal dollars.”

The letter claims the program will end up costing taxpayers hefty legal fees and the end result will likely be that a court will overturn it..."
