"If you have an Amazon device in your home, anything from an Alexa to an Echo, you have just seven days to opt out of an experiment that could put your privacy at risk."

"Amazon Sidewalk will be a shared network that is supposed to help customer devices work better, both in and around your home, like outside lighting that may be wi-fi enabled. If you lose connectivity your device would just switch to a neighbor’s signal so the service wouldn’t be disrupted. "

You can only opt out using the Amazon app. "You can’t opt out from your Amazon account online."

Amazon devices affected but not necessarily limited to include:
Ring Floodlight Cam (2019)
Ring Spotlight Cam Wired (2019)
Ring Spotlight Cam Mount (2019)
Echo (3rd gen and newer)
Echo Dot (3rd gen and newer)
Echo Dot for Kids (3rd gen and newer)
Echo Dot with Clock (3rd gen and newer)
Echo Plus (all generations)
Echo Show (all models and generations)
Echo Spot
Echo Studio
Echo Input
Echo Flex

My Echo

My Echo is connected to the Alexa app, but the "Amazon Sidewalk" step in the instructions provided doesn't show. I'm not sure which generation of Echo I have, but I know it's not the first such. I hope I don't see the "Sidewalk" step because the app knows somehow that my Echo is maybe too old?

Or...and not likely.....maybe it's just too early now for the "Sidewalk" step to show within the app until the June 8th deadline draws nearer?

It would be my guess that

It would be my guess that your Echo is too old. An early adopter:)

You might be able to check the version using these steps,
Check Your Echo Device's Software Version
Open the Alexa app .
Select Devices .
Select Echo & Alexa.
Select your device.
Select About to see your device's software version.

Guess we should all use this method:

Open the Alexa app.
Open “More.”
Select “Settings.”
Select “Account Settings.”
Select “Amazon Prime.”
Disable “Amazon Prime.”
