Nobody else will, either.

Announcing that the Allman Bros. will not be able to perform at Bonnaroo this year (or at their legendary Beacon concerts) because Greg Allman is recuperating from an illness, AC Entertainment says:

We’re glad to hear that Gregg’s doing so well and wish him a continuing speedy recovery. And we can’t wait for the Allman Brothers Band join us again at Bonnaroo in the near future! In the meantime, stay tuned for an exciting Bonnaroo announcement coming your way this Thursday, April 17 via ConcertWire.com and Bonnaroo.com.

So, the rumors were true after all? Heh.

Despite promoters' denials of earlier rumors, the UK Daily Mirror reported yesterday that Led Zeppelin will headline this year's Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester TN, June 12-15.

UPDATE: KAG has more speculation and anecdotal evidence.

Looking for a mid-week diversion from all the Fear and Loathing and dysfunction with, bonus, an opportunity to support local literary and musical excellence? Well, here you go:

The April "Homecookin'" edition of the Writer's Block performance series at Knoxville Museum of Art will feature RB Morris, who will perform solo versions of material from his forthcoming CD, "Empire."

The show is 6:30 - 8 p.m. Wednesday in the KMA auditorium, an amazing little listening room adjacent to the big room. Doors open an hour before showtime.

Admission to the 170-seat room is $7. There's a table loaded with free Panera snacks in the big room. This is an excellent opportunity to support the pretty special Writers' Block program that was started a few years back by host Karen E. Reynolds.

Wow, just saw this guy Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits. If you missed it, check for a rerun. I was vaguely familiar with him, but this show was awesome.

He sings and plays high-energy blues/rock/jam steel guitar, and he's the real deal. And so is his band, the Family Band. At one point on this show he had three other lap/pedal steel players on stage with him (his mentors from church) and it rocked.

AC should get this guy to Knox Vegas. (Edit: He already did.) I checked the interwebs, and I see he's playing at a music fest in Live Oak FL in April (13th and 14th) with the Allman Bros. as headliners. Might be worth a trip to the Sunshine State.

By way of NiT, here's the "leaked" Bonnaroo lineup.

Read the explanation of how the info was discovered. This seems to happen a lot. A while back someone was "poking around" a Nikon website in a similar manner and "found" the specs for a new Nikon camera that "accidentally" got published before they were supposed to.

I always wonder how "accidental" these "leaks" are and how is it that random internet surfers are able to just "stumble across" such info v. how much help they might "accidentally" be getting from marketing/PR types.

But I guess it can happen. Either way, it creates a lot of buzz. See, I'm typing about Bonnaroo right now!

UPDATE: The offical initial lineup is here. More artists to be announced.

UPDATE: Better hurry and get tickets for Lucinda Williams. The good seats are already selling out. The best I could do was center secton row S.

The Knoxville News Sentinel has a follow up article on the Boomsday event in today's business section. Apparently, Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corp. lost $100,000 on the event:

Final numbers aren't yet available, but KTSC spent $900,000 and estimates a loss of up to $100,000, with most of that because of low ticket sales from Montgomery Gentry and other paid events.

[..]

Montgomery Gentry's fee was $125,000 and KTSC incurred extra expenses from enlarging the stage to accommodate the performers. Troy Lee Gentry, a lead singer of the group, drew national outrage just days before Boomsday when he was indicted in Minnesota on federal charges that he shot a caged bear and claimed it was wild.

KTSC was already contractually obligated to the band when the story broke.

Ray said she can't place all of the blame for financial losses on Gentry, although the group's failure to do media interviews to promote Boomsday did have a negative impact.

[..]

"We are asking a lot of questions internally," Ray said.

The article mentions other possible reasons for the losses, but Gloria Ray is correct that there are a lot of questions.

Starting with, $125K for Montgomery Gentry? They're a popular act, but that sounds a little excessive. Does anybody know if this is normal for an act of their stature? Did KTSC negotiate this themselves? Have they ever put on a concert this big? Could they have gotten a popular big name act for less?

And what about scheduling one of the events near Neyland Stadium on game day? It seems like most people would either be at the game or at home watching it. The idea for the big screen was interesting, but the execution failed. Who provided that equipment? Was it designed for outdoor use? Did KTSC have to pay the bill for that even though it didn't work? Would a post-game party be a better idea for next year?

And what about final attendance figures for the ticketed events? I don't think this has been reported in the paper, other than it wasn't as good as expected.

Managing and promoting such a high-profile event with so many moving parts seems like an ambitious undertaking. Does the KTSC have the experience for something like this? The article doesn't mention if they had any outside help, but it would seem like a good idea to bring in an experienced promoter. They wouldn't even have to go very far. There's a nationally recognized promoter right in their own back yard with plenty of experience putting on events of this scale. Did they involve A.C. Entertainment or someone else who knows the business, and if not, why not? Were the new sponsors, Chrysler Jeep, helping with the promotion? Surely they weren't relying on Montgomery Gentry to promote it?

The KTSC is obviously new at this (their second year?) and some of the quotes in the article suggest they are still feeling their way along. It's definitely a big, complicated event, and hopefully they will learn from all this and have better luck next year.

At any rate, an event that draws nearly 400,000 people to Knoxville over the weekend has a huge impact, economic and otherwise. So at least in that regard it was a success. It also seems like a huge opportunity that may have been missed. Maybe with some fine tuning it can break even next year, or even make a little money to help pay off that Convention Center.

Tonight is a good night to go out on the town. I heard on the radio and found details in the MetroPulse that musicians and artists will be performing at 10 different locations to raise money for the Thompson Cancer Survival Center.

If you go out ever, anywhere in Knoxville, chances are you’ve seen Laith Keilany play his guitar. You heard him accompany the likes of Jodie Manross and the Mikel Grubb Band. Or, perhaps you’ve had the unique pleasure of seeing Keilany play the oud, an 11-string middle eastern instrument. He’s played all over Knoxville, and around the Southeast and East Coast. And, it’s not uncommon for Keilany to be playing for free. For years, Keilany (along with Manross) has been the go-to guy when a benefit or fundraiser is in need of a good musician with a good heart. So it’s only fitting that the fourth annual Knoxville at Night will benefit the Thompson Cancer Survival Center and Keilany, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. [Source]

Starting next week Panera will be selling a pink, cherry flavored bagel in the shape of a ribbon to support the fight against breast cancer. A portion of the purchase of these bagels will be donated.

Don’t forget to be at “The Cove” in Concord Park today for a free concert by the Hiptwangers.  The fun begins at 5:30 PM and should last about three hours.  It’s a part of Knox County’s “Second Saturday Sensations” and is usually great family fun.  Bring a picnic dinner and a lawn chair - and maybe a poncho.  Leashed pets are also welcomed.

Update after the break

That's how I'd sum up the Dickey Betts and Great Southern show at the Bijou last night. They seemed a little loose at times, and even lost a couple of times, but Dickey managed to reign everyone in (or they reigned him, hard to say) and they rocked the joint with a high-energy two-hour performance.
