The Washington Post's David Broder thinks so, and he's been covering elections since before a lot of us were even alive, much less following politics.
My thoughts -- this election include
- Real fights for both parties' nominations, especially the Democrats
- The defeat of the "certain" candidate for the Democratic nomination, and a transition from front-runner to practically out of it to nominee for the Republicans
- Fun candidates like Dennis Kucinich and Tom Tancredo
- The weakened influence of the Christian right (they've still got a voice -- witness the Palin selection -- but they did not want McCain)
About the only thing missing is that general election doesn't look to be close. Other than that, its been a great year+ for political junkies.

Paralleling Tancredo with Kucinich is why Broder is an irrelevancy.
True happiness is knowing you are a hypocrite. -- Ivor Cutler
That was me, not Broder -- he doesn't mention either Kucinich or Tancredo.
OK. Just watch that with Kucinich. It's buying (or looks like) into a real horseshit GOP talking point.
True happiness is knowing you are a hypocrite. -- Ivor Cutler
Hey, I like Kucinich -- I voted for him in 2004, though Kerry had clinched the nomination by then.
I was just inspired by NPR's 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me' naming Kucinich and Tancredo as their "Hopeless Candidates of the Year" for 2008.
I never thought I'd see a campaign more enthralling than 1968.
The Democrats in '68:
McCarthy's shocking 42% of the vote in the New Hampshire primary.LBJ getting out of the race.RFK's frantic primary campaign. The violence outside the hall the emotion inside the hall @ the convention.
The Republicans in '68:
Romney's front running campaign implodes.
Rocky's on again,off again,on again campaign.Reagan goes for it @ the convention.Agnew.
The '68 Fall campaign:
Wallace's openly segrationist campaign peaking @ 21% in the polls mid Sept.HHH comes on strong late but it's not enough.
Nixon rises from the ashes to win.
However as folks have already posted 2008 has had it all.
The fall campaign has been hard fought & like HHH in '68 McCain is closing.
Will we see the McCain pull the biggest upset since Truman-Dewey in '48 or the first black candidate elected president?
Either way this election has been something else & surpasses 1968 as the most interesting election I have ever seen.
