Apparently Palin's fervent promotion of abstinence-only education, a position McCain shares, had no impact on Palin's own daughter.

Getting married at age 17
Getting (forced to be married so mommy can run for vp) married at age 17 eh? Nice. I'm sure that will be a stable, love filled marriage.
If I had a pregnant 17 year
If I had a pregnant 17 year old, I might think twice about exposing her to the glare of national publicity. Especially if I were just 44, in my first term as governor, with lots of time left in my political career.
Seems like that might be the family values thing to do.
I dunno; maybe that's just me.
Nice Biden impression...
If I had a pregnant 17 year old, I might think twice about exposing her to the glare of national publicity. Especially if I were just 44, in my first term as governor, with lots of time left in my political career.
So so lifted that from KAG. Nice work Joe.
Bite me.
Bite me.
Those who don't attribute...
Bite me.
No thanks Joe.

I feel really bad for the teen mom. I think that if I knew my teenage daughter were 20 weeks pregnant, I would not accept a role in the national spotlight at this particular time because of the scrutiny it would bring of this very private matter. Poor kid.
She's only 44. She has decades ahead to make her mark on the national stage. Now - with a 4 month old special needs baby and a pregnant teen at home - seems an unusual time to step onto that stage.
Joe, do your own work.
Joe, do your own
Joe, do your own work
De-e-e-e-e-e-e-esperate! Desperate Digit, digging deep, down in the doody. Desperate for orders, barking off stage, "Line! Line!"
If I were gonna "plagerize,"
If I were gonna "lift" an idea, I'd go for something a little less obvious then this. I'm guessing kag and I were just two of thousands of folks who thought the same thing today.
And Mike's certainly in fine fettle today - full of ad hominem attacks both here and on the blab.
Wassa matter, Mikey? You're just not your usual happy self today.
Times have changed. When I
Times have changed. When I was young 'abstinence only' meant telling teens that premarital sex was a ticket straight to hell.
We didn't listen either, so many things would get you there and a lot of those things we saw the deacons and their kids doing.
In the 1988 election Pat Robertson got all bent out of shape because a nosy reporter challenged his 'family values' by mentioning the fact that his wife was several months pregnant when they were wed (something that was simply not done in the fifties). He raved that it was appalling that the press would get so personal.
Of course it all goes back to that biblical bit about casting stones doesn't it?
I wonder if the father is over eighteen. If a divorce from the Gov's sister can get you canned, putting her daughter in a family way could really be a problem had he not agreed to this marriage.

Strange criticism from you
The date I changed my signature was 7-28-08. After the TVUUC shooting I got to thinking about all the extreme crap that is said under the veil of anonymity- like a lot of the poison and hate that you and Tin Cup spew out on a daily basis. When I found out that Adkison was reading Michael Savage, and Bill OReilly, and Sean Hanity and the rest of the "liberals hate America" crowd, my resolve strengthened. Would the online hate-mongers be so bold, flip, and reckless if people knew who you were?
I wasn't going to make a big point out of why I gave up anonymity, but now that you have I will tell you that in my mind it was a direct, if somewhat subtle, challenge to people like you. Also, I figure I will be taken more seriously if I let people know who I am.
So here it is 9. I challenge you and Tin Cup to grow some cojones and come out from your hiding place. Let people know who you are and why you spew out so much hate.
And no, I have no plans to run for office, but thanks for asking.

You can
be sure she will NOT abort the baby(ies) like a liberal would do.
But are you pro-life post-delivery too?
That would mean not denying the child healthcare and not leaving that child a world ravaged by climate change.
If you were truly pro-life you wouldn't be dropping dim-witted one-liners to stir up hatred against "liberals".

Simmah down nah!
Geeez...what's wrong with everybody out here today? The quality of discussion has gone to hell in a hand basket. Can we leave the 17 year old out of this? Would anyone out there want to be judged by the decisions they made as a teenager? Ease up crabby ones.
Obama has reiterated that
Obama has reiterated that candidates' families are off limits. I tend to agree, and also think this is a private matter they need to deal with privately.
That said, it does put the "abstinence only" debate front and center, and the Republican VP nominee is Exhibit A.
Because Palin is now a major political candidate, this is also legitimate information for the news media to report in terms of her policy positions. It is not, however, a license to attack her or her daughter personally for choices they have made. Better to have a legitimate debate about the policy, not the person.
But, this is yet another example, and a very high profile one, of people supporting policies contrary to their own self interests.
It's also a commentary on people who promote legislating morality with the goal of forcing others to adopt their religious views. All of this stuff should be left out of politics and government except for guaranteeing people's right to practice their own faith however they want as long as they don't try to force it on anyone else.
Yup. I can't help wondering
Yup. I can't help wondering if we'd be hearing from the right that this was a private family matter if a candidate's daughter had made a different choice (i.e., abortion).
Very good question. Pam
Very good question.

The GOP should be happy the
The GOP should be happy the media is concerned about the natural disaster, otherwise it would be focusing on McCain's choice for VP which is quickly becoming a political disaster.
It was a bad choice by McCain, and the folly of it will only be made clearer as time goes on.
I agree the kids should be
I agree the kids should be off limits (not that the right would leave it alone if Obama had a 17-year old pregnant daughter...). That doesn't mean we can't discuss the efficacy of abstinence-only education. We just have to leave Palin's daughter out of the discussion.
There are other issues that I've heard people bring up- how fair is it to question whether Palin has the time to be VP and be a parent to all those kids? As one person said to me today, "if you have all those kids, you need to commit to take the time to raise them [and by accepting the VP candidacy, she's not doing so]."
Do we treat Palin with kid gloves? Or by accepting the VP position, isn't it fair to question her decisions and stances on national issues as evidenced by her personal life?
To me, as long as the question relates to a national issue that she takes a public stance on, it's fair game.
time for parenting???
Doesn't John McCain have a passel of kids too? Oh, that's right. He has a wife, so it doesn't matter.
McCain-Bush actually has
McCain-Bush actually has (had) two wives. He cheated on both of them and called one a very nasty word (c word).
You can keep it out of
You can keep it out of debates or discussions, but you can't keep it out of the voters' thoughts.
The other issue will be McCain's judgement in choosing Palin to be his VP, and that issue is in question...especially among many Republicans at this time, no matter what the core may argue.
Unlike some we really need
Unlike some we really need to take the high road on this.

The Repubs are trying to blame the liberals
for this being publicized,,which is not only a lie but flat out silly...
The young woman and her boyfriend made a decision to do this..if this were a dem the repubs would be calling this poor young woman immoral and Karl Rove would be calling her "fair game"....
I do hope libs and moderates leave her alone...we aren't like that slimelizard Rove and don't have to sink to their level..so we need to let this be...
A few concerns about Palin...
Here are a few questions:
If Mrs Palin can't take care of her home, how is she going to step up to help run the US? Believe me - I don't wish to judge her for her daughter's actions, but her daughter is STILL a minor! When Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant - everyone asked: "Where was the mother?" How is this any different?
OK, so the girl kept the baby...that's wonderful, why make Bristol marry? Everyone knows the baby was conceived out of wedlock. Getting married doesn't change the fact that the baby was not conceived within the bonds of marriage. This has always amazed me...it doesn't change a thing...what will happen is that they'll get married and be divorced in less than a year.
Why are the Republicans acting as if this isn't bothering them? They know it's killing them! Has there EVER been a situation like this ever amongst Presidential or VP candidates?
Why would Governor Palin expose her daughter to the white hot spotlight of the WORLD media. I've seen media coverage of this by the BBC and at least three other international news organizations.
What the heck was John McCain thinking? Why didn't he choose Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Senator Olympia Snow? This pick is an absolute joke and to see how the Republicans are lying just to save face is pitiful! They are all speaking from the same play book - it's so sad!
Finally, I can only imagine what other nations are saying about this. They are probably laughing their butts off - particularly countries that don't condone out of wedlock births (Muslim Nations). If McCain thought this was OK - he's even more out of touch than I originally thought he was. There's no explaining this situation away - it's just a darn right shame! America and this VP pick are both the laughing stocks of the world!
This issue is no different
This issue is no different than Al Gore's pot smoking son, it is not something that any of us need to worry about but instead let them deal with it.
The U.S. Constitution, it is what makes us free and makes us American. Let's treat it as such and with care.

it is not something that any of us need to worry about but instead let them deal with it.
That's true. What is worrisome though, at least to me, is how Sen. McCain came to the decision to choose Palin.
As someone noted last night, Palin was legally vetted, but was she politically vetted?
Did the majority of McCain's advisers agree with this decision, or did McCain make it largely on his own?
On a number of levels, Palin seems like a bad pick, not because of family issues specifically, but because of the ability of those issues to distract voters from the campaign message and to overshadow whatever attributes the candidates would bring to the White House.
I can't see campaign officials not seeing this happening with the choice of Palin. Did they see it and warn McCain, and he failed to heed their warnings?
The issue surrounding Palin's daughter is one that too many Republicans have made for the party, and that is being one of national moralizers.
If the party had remained focused on ideology and governing philosophy, it could have avoided this issue.
Instead, for almost the last two decades, it has focused on espousing it's superiority on "moral" issues, in the interests of the Christian right, and it has created the situation it now finds itself in.
Talk about damning with faint praise
The issue surrounding Palin's daughter is one that too many Republicans have made for the party, and that is being one of national moralizers.

Universal health care is ultimately a moral issue
Education, war, climate change: all moral issues.

I plan on planning for my future as if the only one who can do anything about it is me and no one else so yes, I plan on not only refusing Medicare but were it up to me we would end Social Security and the subsequent drain on America that it is and have everyone plan for their future. Anyone who depends on the government for such aid needs to take a hard look at their life and examine what they can do now to plan for their own future.

Please be sure to follow up with us on this. I'll be very interested to know whether you are able to get health insurance at 70 and what the premiums will be. Yup, I'd like to know as well. My dad, who's 84, had a mild heart attack last winter and ended up having to have a quadruple bypass. He had a small stroke during surgery, so he ended up in the hospital for five weeks (two on the rehab floor).
I don't have the total #s on the hospital & doctor bills, but the bill for just the hospital time on the rehab floor was $43,000.
My dad's been disabled since I was 16. My mom is a good $$ manager. But without Medicare, my sisters & I would probably be paying off his medical bills until WE'RE 84.
So please - get back to us and let us know how you do without Medicare.
P.S. Dad's doing very well now. :)
'Spewing hate'=pointing out objective facts? Um, got it.
It's a reply like yours which shows leftists can't differentiate between morals and government programs.
Libs are all too willing to use other people's money to build their cradle-to-grave nanny state. Controlling the weather? Oh, that's a "moral" issue. We need more government programs. Indoctrinating our children by leftist unions like the NEA? Oh, that's a "moral" issue. We need more government programs...blah, blah, blah.
Libs believe everything from midnight basketball to a Hover-Round chair should be paid for (with someone else’s money, of course) if you can manage to make it out of the womb alive (and BO doesn’t even let that stop him).
Dems have morals...
we just don't try to force them down the throats of other people..or pretend we have them when we don't...most Repubs are hypocrits and that's a fact jack...and are as amoral as anyone in the history of this country...
Nor will dems be attacking this child who is having a child, or attacking Palin over this...
I think the criticism will come from southern Repubs /conservatives who don't believe in the choice of Palin for VP..so you can blame your own kind..
You make all valid points
You make all valid points but again, the question is whether or not abstinence can work, does it work, should it be the main strategy, so forth, and leave that kid out of it. I am going to diverge here for a moment on Obama.
When I see Obama with his wife and children, I see a stable, loving, safe, and secure home that they have built together (the epitome of "family values). Furthermore, I see a father who does not wish to drag his children around and have them harassed by everyone and their brother (again, a classic "family values" moment). It is clear from viewing the interaction of Obama with his two daughters that he is a good Dad (yet again, more "family values") and loves them in a way that a normal Father will love his children. So, why is Obama afraid of being outfront and outloud about "family values?" My God, the man is walking poster for it.
There are few on this site, I suspect, that will agree that abstinence should be taught at all so why not teach that a little cocaine use is okay, because that is the logic of teaching sex ed in today's world. It's okay for girl's to have sex with contraception since that is all that matters and nothing else. However, there is more to sex than just physical activity and for those of you who promote sexual activity among teens you have it dead wrong. Those emotional issues alone are enough to screw up a teen, not to mention the fact that contraception is NOT 100% effective. Abstinence is the only proven method to stop teen pregnancy and the only way to teach young women that their mind, NOT their body, is their most important asset.
The U.S. Constitution, it is what makes us free and makes us American. Let's treat it as such and with care.
"Abstinence is the only

That's just, to put it bluntly, a lie.
Geez, you're thick
Show me statistics that prove the abstinence (instead of education) programs have successfully prevented teen pregnancy. But you knew you were being misleading and obtuse, hoping to muddy the debate, didn't you?
You and your givers of talking points know the facts support sex education and dictate against spending time and money on those stupid "good girls wait" billboards, which accomplish only one thing, creating profits for political friends.

I have no idea what picture you are talking about and if I did I would tell you to ask McCain about it. I was talking about one candidate and one only and you are doing what any member of the Liberal Horde always does, when someone praise Obama, you still want to twist and turn it around for your warped view of life. Did it ever occur to you and your kind that Obama could easily win a large percentage of the social conservative vote by just showcasing himself? No, it did not because that would mean actually having some morals and setting a good example, something he is doing with his family but he is loathe to admit it. Go figure.

”I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.” - Barack Obama

I appreciate your take on the 1980 election, but, sorry, it wasn't so.
Exit polls in the 1980 Presidential election showed that only 11% of voters had voted for Reagan because he was a "real conservative." The majority of voters said they voted for Reagan because they wanted a new leader or a change.
Carter's demise wasn't due to his "atheist liberalism;" rather it was due to his handling of several crises and his low approval ratings.

The issue is this: McCain
The issue is this: McCain bowed down to the pro-life evangelical wing of the party. They threatened a floor fight if he picked Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman because of their belief in abortion rights.
This from the supposed "Maverick" of the party.
The problem with his strategy is that by allowing the evangelical wing to take over the party, he now has people calling the shots in the campaign who actually believe that the general election will turn on the pro-life/pro-choice debate.
It won't.
