I'm sorry for that.
It's a very difficult format to deal with.
:-(
Maybe Clark will see this and paste in a copy of the story, which is very interesting--
Nutshell version: 19 year old executive committee (or whatever) member gets a letter from chairperson SW telling her she must resign or be impeached because she was seen celebrating at GOP headquarters election night. The kid said her mother works for Fred Sisk, and she was there celebrating the Sisk victory. Sylvia says the kid has been a slacker and being at GOP HQ was just the last straw. She says Randy Nichols' very public support of JJ Jones is different.
So are the Dems going to kick this kid to the curb??
Let me assure you and every
Let me assure you and every other Democrat out there: this ain't gonna happen. I know Caroline Hindman. She was elected last year and supported me as Party Chair. I have talked with her about this and numerous other Dems. If anything, the election on 8/7 showed us that we don't need to be kicking Democrats out of the party, we need to be pulling Independents and moderate GOPers into it. I went to school with Caroline's mom. These are good people. So now we can't socialize with Republicans? Maybe that's the mentality that got us no better than 42% in the big races 8/6. The folks I have talked to about this are outraged that the youngest Democratic District Representative in Tennessee is being attacked by the Chair of the Party for attending one. Pathetic. Blaming a 19 year old for a poor performance on election night is about as nonsensical as G W Bush saying in an interview in Beijing that "America doesn't have any problems." We'll take care of this Tuesday night. One way or another.
With Hornback wanting to
With Hornback wanting to throw out any Republicans who support either charter amendment ((link...)) ((link...)), we may end up with a lot more Independents in Knox County
Rachel, Rachel, Rachel
there you go again, with your little bomb throwing infatuation of me. Brian's Blog is quoting from the bylaws. I do not advocate anyone being thrown out. Get a new infatuation, pleeease.
Partisanship doesn't fix
Partisanship doesn't fix potholes. Hindman should be applauded for giving a darn, not ridiculed.
Heck, if she's sharp enough to go to hang out with the folks who won the night -- and then get great press for doing it -- she's got a great future in politics.
Dead-on. Well said.
Dead-on. Well said.
I'm a liberal...
I usually vote for a Democrat, but if ever the day comes when a Republican espouses a platform and ideals that are closer to mine than the Democrat...I'm gonna be voting for the Republican. I vote issues that mean something to me. I vote my conscience...not a party line or ticket.
We don't need someone to be kicking people out of a supposedly big tent party that says that all people are welcome. Maybe the party chairman needs to do a little soul-searching of her own and count up all her sins before shes casts people out or throws stones.

Demo. Party of Knox County
I have held back making comments about the previous chair of the Democratic Party of Knox County and his twisting of the truth in the media as I felt it would best serve the 12 candidates running in the August 7th election to focus on them. We picked up two County Commission seats which we previously did not have. Yes, we got beat in other races. But, if you will recall, I was only elected to the Chair position on June 19th, a few weeks before early vote started. Up until that time the previous Party chair had done nothing to help the candidates.
The officers of the Party met with the candidates the day after I returned to town. The Party voted on a plan of action that that came out of that meeting and it brought more unity between the candidates and the Party than ever before. Just ask any of the candidates. The Party put together a media campaign, sample ballots, phone calls, door knocking, and helping candidates put out signs at voting locations. We put out a Demo Memo newsletter on line and in the mail. The first since Betty Reddick was Chair. There was no plan in place before I was elected chair.
We staffed the headquarters which was sitting emply for a month and a half because we did not know former chair Daugherty had signed a contract on the place until after he resigned. By the way he resigned by way of Metro Pulse and not by notifying his board.
Now to Caroline Hindman. After she was seen on TV, I received a request that she be impeached, because of inattention to duty and lack of support for Democratic candidates. In order to prevent embarrassment to this young lady, I sent her an email asking if she would like to resign. Our bylaws say: "Party officers, District Representatives, and Ward/Precinct Chairs many be impeached from office by the Executive Committe for inattention to duty, incompetence, or failure to support candidates for office nominated by the Democratic Party." Caroline serves as a District Representative on the Board of Governors and on the Executive Committee, and she has missed over half of the meetings since she was elected. One would think celebrating at the Republican Party would show a lack of support for the Democratic candidates. It is not up to me to impeach anyone, I preside and do not vote.
Former chair Daugherty requested several people be removed from the Board just because of their lack of attendance. It seems that now he wants to play good guy and to heck with the progress the Party has made.
On Saturday, in a joint email with two other friends of hers, I notified Caroline, I was going to talk with her personally before I brought the impeachment request up. It will not be on the agenda for the Tuesday Executive Committee.
We have a lot of work to do, and if our Board members don't participate, then they need to move over and let someone else work. The honorable thing to do would be to resign if they don't have time to serve. And the honorable thing to do is to resign if they cannot support the Democratic candidates.
I think Caroline is a nice person, and she should decide whether or not she wants to abide by the rules. If not, as I said, it would be better to do the right thing and leave honorably.
Sylvia Woods, Chair, Democratic Party of Knox County
Is there a waiting list or a
Is there a waiting list or a line of people interested in serving at any capicity for your Party? Go ahead force her out she will make a good independent or republican.
Who wrote these silly rules?
Sounds like some of the over the top neighborhood covenants from high end subdivisions. Inclusion works better than exclusion. Sounds like, "Thou shalt have no Republican friends". Nice people.
Pleased
I am pleased that the Chair is proceding according to the bylaws. I am also pleased the matter is not on the agenda for tomorrows meeting.
The Party bylaws do provide for impeachment if an Executive Committee member has been inattentive to duty or failed to support Democratic nominees.
But there is a reason the Party bylaws say "may" & not shall be impeached.
"May" be impeached gives the Executive Committee the ability to discuss the matter without the Draconian requirement of impeachment.
The Chair says that Ms.Hindman is a good person..I agree..I know her & I like her.
Futhermore, the Chair went on to say:
"she should decide whether or not she wants to abide by the rules."
I agree with that also.
Ms.Hindmind as an Executive Committee member did not make the best of choices attending the GOP rally. However, given that Mr.Sisk is an old friend of her family I'm sure she was thinking friendship & not politics.
I'm hoping that all parties in this matter are looking for resolution & not conflict. No need to pour gasoline on the fire with harsh words.
If everybody is calm we can get this matter behind us & get on with the important work of electing Democrats this fall.
Not Pleased
I bit my blog tongue when this happened to me. But no more.
With all due respect to Bill Young, who has been active in the Knox County Dem Party since Hector was a pup, I am not pleased with this type of Draconian tactic. It happened to me, too.
Under Don's tenure, I got replaced as the second district co-chair, then they held an election to replace me again, after they realized they violated their own by-laws. After realizing the new appointment again violated their own by-laws, they sent me a certified letter asking if I wanted to stay, when my replacement was already listed on the web site. So then they hold a meeting to replace me for the third time before the date of the meeting in the certified letter, violating the by-laws yet again.
Didn't know you could be fired three times. In baseball, I guess you call that a hat trick!
Knox County Democrats need to focus on the next election and quit all this power struggle crap. I think some folks need to get sent to the woodshed. They seem more interested in running off new people they can't control than they do actually growing the party. They're now using the "attendance clause" to selectively weed out folks they don't want. You MUST sit through those pointless meetings where they argue for hours over the venue for Truman Day or they will kick you out.
If they want this County Party, they got it! Good luck with that. There are many more Dems out in the shadows working on campaigns than there are active within this party organization. If you want to help Dems, you're better off working on a specific campaign than sitting around a bunch of people arguing about Roberts Rules of Order.
All the Dems need to put more in the Win column in Knox County are better candidates, a good cadre of willing campaign managers, and strong GOTV. The Dem party hasn't provided much campaign support or fundraising capabilities that campaigns themselves can't do.
And when it was happening to me, the difference between "may" and "shall" spoke volumes about the intent of the party. After going to three of those ridiculous board meetings, I missed a couple, but communicated with my district co-chair to make sure I didn't miss anything important. Even an email saying, "hey we missed you at the last meeting, but I know you were traveling on business..." might have been nice. All I got was a certified letter, three months after I had been replaced.

Doug:
I have no problem with you disagreeing with me about anything. But get your sports' terms right, ok? I played baseball for 15 years. A hat trick is a hockey term.

You probably got on Wiki and added that item right before posting. Good job. Wish you would have been as diligent when you were elected on M,arch 31, 2007 last year to represent the 2nd District, came to 2 meetings, and then disappeared. Where was this passion last summer-fall?
that's quite an accusation,
that's quite an accusation, Don.
I think you're about due for a trip through the wayback machine. After the third time I gave you my business card and asked you to call me to discuss plans for the second district and you never did, I finally gave up.
It was clear you were not interested.
How about you two take it
How about you two take it outside?
Bill, you summed it up
Bill,
you summed it up brilliantly.
"you can't build a Party if you spend all your time throwing folks out."
I wish I could have said it that well.
thanks.
Doug: You did most certainly
Doug:
You did most certainly . . . give up. You came to 2 Board meetings (April-May) after the 2nd District elected you in March '07. 2 meetings. You gave no explanation. So the 2nd District only had one representative during the next 8 months, until you were replaced. And you seriously expected me to believe that discussing plans for the 2nd District were even on your radar? Give me a break.
As the other Second District
As the other Second District Representative, I can attest to the fact that Doug and I had several in-depth discussions about plans for the Second District. And I made a point at several meetings to explain that Doug had a work conflict when his name was called at roll call. Unfortunately, Doug's work schedule was unpredictable, and often created a last-minute conflict with our BOG meetings (however, given the behavior of our party at most meetings, I can understand why Doug is not sorry he missed them).
Amy Broyles
I think Don's crass comments
I think Don's crass comments speak volumes. He's clearly not interested in building up the party, but in tearing people down.
I'll leave it there, and continue my work on the campaigns and issues that are really important. I'm not important. The issues are.
See you all in the trenches.
Amy: ...(however, given the
Amy: ...(however, given the behavior of our party at most meetings, I can understand why Doug is not sorry he missed them).
And our public behavior on this thread is equally frustrating. Folks, why not just pick up the phone and speak with your party chair about this privately? I did.
Who started this public brawl, anyway? Oh, that's right.
Executive Committee
For a long long time it has mystified me why the Executive Committee has so much trouble following the by-laws.Your story is a great example of that.Nowhere in what happened to you was Art.VIII followed.
That is why I am pleased the Chair will follow the by-laws in this matter.
I have not talked to the principals in this matter therefore I dont know if bridges have been burned.I hope not.
I will talk to the principals tomorrow night.
I too agree that you cant build a Party if you spend all your time throwing folks out.
Bill, You sound like a
Bill, You sound like a reasonable man. Don't let the chair mislead you. I can forward you the threatening e-mail that this person sent to my 19 year old. I, personally, would have made a phone call and allowed for an explanation before putting a threat in writing. Caroline was not asked to resign, she was told to resign or be impeached. She was aware that she was missing too many meetings and had even previously offered her resignation - which was rejected. She missed meetings because of work responsibilities and her service with the Knox Area Volunteer Rescue Squad. This action is strictly an act of vengeance. The Chairman of the Dem. party was upset on election night and got together with a few hot heads who thought they would take out their frustrations on a 19 year old who would just roll over. OOps.
Mom
I admire Caroline because she was willing to step up & become a member of the Democratic Executive Committee at the last convention.I've talked to some of my fellow "old fools"in the Party & to a person they all really think the world of Caroline.
Sometimes in politics "stuff" really gets in a ditch & you cant figure out why in the devil it got to this point & why on earth you ever got involved in politics in the first place. This is one of those times for Caroline.
I firmly believe the Chair,Caroline & members of the Executive Committee can work together for a resolution to this matter.
I look foward to talking to you & Caroline @ the convention.

Here we go again. Airing dirty laundry on the great www.
Sure wish you could unite your party and concentrate on electing Obama. You could start by looking at yourself first.
you should continue to hold
you should continue to hold your tounge. We still have canidates running...........We always have canidates running or preparing to run. Remember 2010 election cycle is just around the corner. In fact the Dem Party reorganization convention is just 7 months away.
I think the young lady made
I think the young lady made a perfectly fine choice. If party allegiance depends upon not showing up to congratulate a close family friend, then it's no wonder the local Democratic Party is in the shape it's in. Maybe she was really just at the gala event to support our fine DA and his republican buddy JJ. Oh, wait, that's different. Yet, this young lady should "do the right thing and resign?" Give me a break. Our local party is a circus and it's embarrassing. I might go to the next GOP victory party myself, just to see what one feels like.
I too find Don's comments
I too find Don's comments ironic as he twice demanded I resign for "insubordination". He's supposedly all about expanding the party but wants to kick out the guy who's now managed two successful campaigns for Commission.

Anonymous got it right!
Anonymous got it right! Looks like Paul Witt's going to get his chance at the big time. I'm sure Kathy Bryant- who was a very good Commission Candidate - will seek Paul's counsel. As I recall, Paul's wife and Kathy are close friends. Kathy is bright, she's young, she has a lot of energy, and serves as a clear alternative - in many ways - to the GOP candidate. Good luck, Kathy!
All of this crap is the
All of this crap is the reason I've never been able to join the Knox County Democratic party. If I had right-wing leanings I wouldn't be able to join the Knox County Republican party either.
Sad, that.
Sisk, Party
I gladly voted for Sisk over Bratton and have never sought another Party role after being a ward chair required to support Diane Jordan. That said, I think Bean and Cagle are eager to take whatever kind of crap Daughtery and others send them on Sylvia, Jim Gray or whoever and print it without verifying, ie the lies about the headquaters. I'm glad Sylvia has finally answered.
One or two Dems supporting the GOP is one thing, when almost all our elected officials supported Haslam was another. Sylvia and other Women's Club members signed letters condeming that action, Wade Till, chair at the time did not. Don Daughtery sent out letters about how he was upset that many Dems were supporting Joe Bailey. Jim Gray resigned after Diane Jordan (who was also with the GOP on election night) and others sued over term limits. Some things are worth towing the Party line for. Voting for candidates who behaved like Bratton or candidates that sued to throw out the charter is not. I would giverCaroline a pass and be harder on some of our elected officials who support the GOP, who hold more power than a 19 yearold. We also need some better county wide candidates next time and people who agree to be ward chairs should attend meetings.
Stacey: I don't even know
Stacey:
I don't even know you. I have never spoken to you. Yet you pretend to know something about my integrity? You cannot possibly know much at all about my tenure as Chair because you were not even on the Board or Ex-Committee. I think Cagle and Bean and Georgiana all know a bit more about journalism and politics than you give them credit for. I will say that as much as possible, Democrats should support Democrats. But I recognize that there are times when that is not possible. Caroline had her reasons for being at GOP HQs, and they were legitimate. I know plenty of Dems who had JJ signs in there yards, and a number of them are ward officers. If you are going to make an example out of someone - make it out of someone who has been around long enough, not a 19 year old who viewed her loyalty to her mom and a life long friend as taking priority over politics.
Sylvia... This is NOT Change
Sylvia...
This is NOT Change we can believe in. You said, you were "The One" that could unite the Clinton and Obama people. Please....This cannot be the way.
I'm not a big local Democrat
I'm not a big local Democrat or nuthin' (I am a local leftist, however). I say vote for whomever (and I've voted for some local R's in my day, even in a few R primaries, just to stave off pure evil when I think my vote can count), but even I think it's pretty insulting to the local Dem party for an executive committee member to feast with the opposition party on election night. I mean, have some dignity and respect, why dontcha? Go down with the ship, executive girl, at Sapphire. Send mommy's boss a congratulations card. It's not differential calculus. It's not even "Scruples," the board game.
It's one thing to kill your own young, tho. That's easy. So while I understand why the slacker was thrown overboard, I won't be impressed until the Democrats take a hard line nationally, with the opposing party they fear and allow to manipulate their every move.
Seriously, somebody give me an answer to this:
Can we agree that Randy Nichols is the highest-ranking elected Dem in Knox County? Highest profile, too, given his longevity and his run for statewide office. Probably the best paid.
So why is his well-publicized support of JJ Jones for sheriff not subject to the same sanctions as this 19 year old kid who was, basically, supporting her mom's boss in this employment-at-will state? Why one and not the other? How is the attorney general's public conduct less important than who a teenager in an unpaid, appointed position supports?
Also, Nichols isn't the only Dem who openly supported a Republican. I drive past the Tazewell Pike home of one prominent Democrat who is an EC member on an almost daily basis, and couldn't miss the big ol' JJ sign in his front yard.
I really don't understand.
Bullies don't pick on the
Bullies don't pick on the big guys.
I do hope all of you that
I do hope all of you that have posted here will be at the convention tonight.
Oh, Lord Repubs weighing in

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 19, 2008
Contact: Corey Johns
865-591-5331
Knox County Democrats have signaled intent to impeach a 19 year old Precinct Chairman at tonight's Democrat Convention. The alleged offense involves attending the GOP Victory Party to congratulate Fred Sisk, a life-long family friend who was comfortably elected Knox County Trustee on August 7.
In response, a group of young republicans will gather in a show of solidarity for the young woman prior to tonight's Democrat Convention. The event is scheduled to take place at 6:00 pm in the Assembly Room of the City County Building.

Parties that lose shouldn't
Parties that lose shouldn't ossify, but they do.
I once threw a guy out of a Democratic Town Committee up here in Massachusetts. OK, I demanded his resignation - and he gave it - but I was prepared to use attendance requirements to expel him if I had to.
Of course, he had just been arrested for an ugly sex offense, so it wasn't for something so relatively minor as supporting a Republican, but the state party charter forbids expulsion prior to conviction (and the guilty plea took a couple more years).
My point: Save draconian punishments for serious matters, and this isn't one, especially not in Knoxville, especially not when high officials are not held to the same standard.
Liberty and justice for all.
