So how long before GOOOOPERS call Obama's plans to give his acceptance speech at Invesco Field a Nuremburg Rally. Over/Under or Pick 'em?

If you define fascism like that college dropout momma's boy Jonah Goldberg, sure.*

I'd be curious...

Since you object to Goldberg's definition of fascism, what your own definition is. Whether you like him or not, he has a point in saying that fascist and fascism is a very loosely used term these days.

Nationalist statism that

Nationalist statism that promotes a corporatist capitalist economic system. As for what Jonah Goldberg says, someone who could not complete an undergraduate degree and/or has not shown that he could not get by without using his parent's political connections to supply him with jobs needs to shut up. My standard is whether or not he could hold down a job at a Long John Silver's in Central Virginia. He couldn't.

Let's Ask

Let's ask the guy who founded the Fascist party what he thinks fascism is (and, no, it's nowhere close to Doughy Pantsload's definition):

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power”

Yeah, bunch of dirty liberal tree hugging hippie CEOs!!

Want to go to the convention? Go to Obama's website.

Make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, and you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to meet Barack backstage and watch his acceptance speech in person.

According to an email from Donna Brazile, you can also donate to the DSCC and get a chance to win a trip to the convention.

Even as little as $5 can make a difference. Give now and you will be automatically entered into the DSCC's contest to send you and a guest straight to the convention.

Prominent in Italian fascism, yes, but I don't think that captures its essence. I recommend Umberto Eco's yardstick.

Again, Eco is serious and funny at the same time. Good link. I never bandy the word 'fascist' as I have no idea what life under something like that would be. No matter the right-wing handwringing in this country about loss of "freedom" and other blather like that, any such lurch toward totalitarianism, a moral state, has to have authoritarianism, a categorical state, as its foundation. If you just give up on the notion of foundations, then you can worry about real things like eating, sleeping, loving, etc.

Heh

I had forgotten about Umberto Eco's piece.
Thanks for the reminder!
I really like him and his writings.

Yes, but one could say the same about Stalinism or Maoism which, despite Goldberg's yammering to the contrary, are not examples of fascism. The former are hyper-programmatic, while the latter is in a sense anti-programmatic (or rather, fascism is capable of adapting itself to any program and shifting to another at the drop of a hat).

That's what makes fascism so slippery and hard to define. It's less a mode of thought than primeval, irrational anti-thought.

I was speaking generally (not just about fascism), but, as with any good point, yours hits the mark.
