I've been seeing numerous caravans of large dump trucks marked "radioactive" hauling material to the Mt. Olive community. Is this something we South Knoxvillians should be alarmed with or do we just ignore it and be thankful that it is helping us save money on our heating bills? I have also noticed the glowing night sky's have lessened the need for porch lights, and flashlights lately.
"Do you see a destination? Or, are they traveling through?"
Traveling into Knoxville on 33 about a quarter mile after you pass Mt Olive school and just before you get to the underpass, they turn right into the road that leads to the Mayo site.
Didn't know they had a facility there neare the Mayo site...
I didn't either! It is rather disturbing to find out that they were hauling radioactive material to a dump to within almost throwing distance of Mt. Olive School during the 4 years I attended there. Trucks were probably passing right by the school during the day while we were in the classrooms. Now the question is, did they build the Montgomery Village Housing Projects in the very geographical center, between the two Whitherspoon dumps, as a way to eliminate the poor population of South Knoxville? (conspiracy alert)
Although it is great that they have finally cleaned up the sites, it is bothersome to think that our government, has over the past forty years allowed the radioactivity from these sites, to infect an area with as large of population, as is there, without doing something about it sooner, and you know Oak Ridge was very aware of the location of the dump during it's prime use.
Just because they have cleaned up the localized area of these dumps, what is to be done about the so-called unaffected areas around these dumps? I wouldn't be surprised if minute traces of radioactivity can be found in every old building, tree or object found within the vicinity. Any person who will live in the area for any extended amount of time, will surely be affected by these. Just as rain erodes rock, I'm sure exposure to these poisons, after long periods of time, no matter how minute, would eventually have a negative impact on peoples health.
I've always known that we citizens of South Knoxville were mutants, but the reason for this is now coming clearer. I wonder how many lives, health wise, Witherspoon's has destroyed because of his illegal dump?

I wonder too about the community behind Mount Olive Church. At one time there was a very poor community there. The children attended Mount Olive School. Are the seeds from Mayo contaminated?
You could be correct about that! So it is possible that these are empty trucks coming back to the site after hauling waste away. This would be a little more sensible than hauling material in and it is also a little more comforting. Adrift in the Sea of Humility
Yes, they are hauling material away. This is the other major Witherspoon site, and they started working there after cleanup of the first one was finished.
Except work at this site started many months ago, and I haven't seen any activity there in a while. There used to be a sheriff's deputy parked there regularly. I drove by this morning and saw nothing. Are you just getting around to posting something you meant to post long ago?

No, I'm just so far behind the times and I didn't realize that this was also one of Witherspoon's dumpsites, I just thought, "here we go again."
I've passed trucks on Pellissippi Parkway headed towards Maryville several times lately and I didn't know of their destination. Twice I saw these same trucks at the Weigles at the corner of John Sevier and Maryville Pike turning north towards Knoxville. Today I decided to follow them and that's the reason I made the post. My paranoid nature had me believing they were hauling material in instead of out. Their truck beds were covered, so this only fueled my whacked out imagination.
Maybe they're on their way to haul stuff away from the Witherspoon site up the road a ways?

No, I have passed the same trucks on many different occasions traveling on Pellisippi Parkway coming from the direction of Oak Ridge!

Which is also the road to Witherspoon, if I'm understanding your directions correctly.
I thought Witherspoon was further up the road in Vestal? Didn't know they had a facility there neare the Mayo site...
