FYI... The City of Knoxville has a new Law Director - Debbie Poplin - the first woman law director in the city's history. I have known Debbie since she took an honors Political Science course I taught at UT more than a little while back. It is very heartening to see outstanding students such as Debbie as they progress through their careers. She is a most outstanding person.

With that in mind I have to say that the "comments" on this article are, taken as a whole, totally depressing and very troubling. You really have to wonder how people can hide behind a curtain of anonymity and say these sorts of cruel and demeaning thing about other human beings, especially when they have absolutely no knowledge of the person. I can only imagine how it must feel for a professionally accomplished woman to read this stuff. How could this not put a cloud over what should be (and is) a day that represents the fruits of years of hard work?

Congratulations to Ms.

Congratulations to Ms. Poplin. From all appearances, another good move by our City Mayor.

As for anonymous comments, all you have to do is stop at anonymous. If you don't have to stand behind it or be held accountable for it, some people will say anything.

Sounds like a good

Sounds like a good promotion. Congratulations to Ms. Poplin.

Re. the comments at KNS, I'm just glad the KNS setup comments for their articles so creeps like that can go over there instead of spewing their bile over here. It may have affected our blog traffic a little, but that's A-OK with me.

Oh, wait. I see in your update they have had a First Amendment Crushing "Stalinist purge" at the KNS, too. Where will the creeps go now?

Mrs. Poplin is probably the

Mrs. Poplin is probably the most competent director the clueless mayor has appointed. She is a great person and a fantastic attorney. She will do well. I just hope that she doesn't get tangled up in the ways of the Haslam family.

I hope that he stands behind

I hope that he stands behind this minority director better than he did the hispanic fire chief. He hung that guy out to dry!

"Minority director"?

Women are a minority?

News to me ...

Females are a protected

Females are a protected class per the EEOC. The "majority" typically refers to white males. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I sincerely apologize if I did. Just making a point.

I'm not offended, and there's no need to apologize

I was just suggesting you be more thoughtful in your choice of verbiage.

White males have been invested with a great deal of privilege over the years, but I don't think most folks consider them the majority, at least folks with a reasonable competency in math.

Debbie Poplin

I worked with Debbie when I was with the city during the Ashe administration. She's smart, gets along with pretty much everybody and understands getting things done. She will be an excellent law director.
