I subscribe to a lot of food magazines and Gourmet is one of my faves. They have excellent writing that is some of the best food geography on the planet. They don't insist that you have a $75000 kitchen to cook their recipes, and every issue has a cook's tips that is worth the $24 a year alone.

This month's issue has a bit on Blackberry Farms in Blount County. I've always been a bit skeptical of a place that can run $1000 a night, but it seems the Beall family is attempting to bring to Tennessee a holistic, slow and whole foods approach to leisure that is interesting. I am sure there are minuses for the community, but hat tip goes to Cheri Cruze at Cruze Farms who is mentioned in the article. Hands down the best milk you can get in East Tennessee and a great family business. It was really nice meeting them at the Riverdale community market 2 weeks ago. We made homemade mozzarella with that milk and it was great. Unhomogenized milk rules with an iron fist.

I am brewing up Blackberry Farms' Peach BBQ sauce right now.

Looks good...

That peach BBQ sauce looks more like a peach chutney.

I'd add some whole dried black currants (as a last step), but that's just me.

We've never stayed there,

We've never stayed there, but a few years back we went up there and arranged a stay for my Mom and Dad as an anniversary gift.

My Mom absolutely loved it. My Dad, who usually hates those sorts of things (he'd rather stay home and eat Mom's excellent cooking) begrudgingly admitted it was pretty great.

We spent a couple of nights

We spent a couple of nights up there as a sort of honeymoon (our real honeymoon - a trip to the west coast - was delayed a few month). It was wonderful, and if I had tons of $$ I'd go back every year.

A bit of trivia - Sam & Ann Furrow's daughter got married the same day we did (although they got married at Blackberry Farm, and we got married in the back yard at home). Anyhoo, the newlyweds were staying there when we were (we talked to them once; they seemed pleasant). We were amused at dinner one evening to see that Sam & Ann had made themselves part of the honeymoon by coming to dine with the newlyweds. And we were even more entertained by the loud advice that Sam was giving his son-in-law all through dinner. It wasn't "plastics", but it was close.

Raw milk ?

I understood that it is illegal to sell unpasteurized milk in Tennessee. But I'm glad you enjoyed it.

edit: my bad - you said unhomogenized, not unpasteurized.

Cruze Farm buttermilk rocks,

Cruze Farm buttermilk rocks, too!

I'm a country girl, so I love good buttermilk, and not just for cooking. Cruze buttermilk is the best I've ever had.

What?

"I am sure there are minuses for the community"
What the heck does that mean? "It's Tennessee and the South, man, they can't do anything right."
Talk about a back-handed compliment.

I'm goin' with "make as much

I'm goin' with "make as much money out of land as possible!"
