...Salvaged pet food from companies known or suspected of using a tainted ingredient was shipped to hog farms in several states for use as feed....

Then maybe fed to us. No evidence of harm to humans. Until a human reports harm, I guess.

"At this time, we have no evidence of harm to humans associated with the processed pork product, and therefore no recall of meat products processed from these animals is being issued," the Food and Drug Administration and Agriculture Department said in a joint statement.

OK, so the head of the FDA and Ag Dept. can have the first big plate of pulled pork BBQ and prove it.

Maybe there's no evidence because rat poison and contaminated pet food haven't previously been introduced into the human food chain. And because people don't generally eat their pets?

My son says Utah is killing all their pigs...

Don't know if it's true...but maybe they're onto something that other states will soon be following.

I doubt there is a mechanism by which the poisons in the food can get into the muscle tissue of an animal that eats it. What I don't get is why they are not worried about the pigs getting sick and dying. Would that just mean they go to the slaughterhouse ahead of schedule?

When an animal gets slaughtered, pig, cow, chicken, whatever, it has potential contaminants in its digestive tract that could come into contact with the meat if the carcass is improperly handled. Trace amounts of rat poison in the digestive tract wouldn't much change that risk level.
