Plant Those Easter Lilies
Submitted by Les Jones on Wed, 2007/04/04 - 9:58pm.
We bought an Easter Lily for my mom tonight. While I was checking out the cashier mentioned that he always planted his, and they kept coming back. I didn't know that you could plant Easter Lilies. Did you know that?
Here's info on how to plant Easter Lilies from Hortchat.com. (And is it just me, or does Hortchat sound vaguely dirty?) They're not hardy in all parts of the country, but Tennessee is apparently warm enough for them to overwinter.
In Houston I had Easter Lilies in several beds. They spread and can be thinned out. The bulbs look like garlic cloves. I gave many to my neigbhors who send me photos of when they bloom. I have not tried them here. The lilies are cheaper if you buy them after Easter.

Buying them after Easter is the way to go. I've got a bunch of them, as well as Stargazers and Casablancas, which are frequently for sale as potted plants in the Kroger plant department. They all do fine when transplanted into the yard. I keep mine in big pots and they winter-over nicely. I keep amaryllis, too, but bring them inside during the winter.
