Pelosi in Syria

With all of the usual suspects whining about Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria as being either counterproductive or treasonous (you pick), it's nice to see that editorial pages in newspapers in the region are actually glad that she came. The Jordan Times is no anti-Bush rag. It is one of several mouthpieces for the ruling Hashemites and therefore rather predisposed toward whichever way the wind is blowing in Washington.

Aware that the road to solving many of the region's problems goes through Damascus, the powerful Democrat dismissed criticism of her visit, expressing her delegation's "clear intention to make our stances very clear to the Syrian leadership."
The U.S. Congressional delegation will not have traveled all the way to Syria simply to congratulate Bashar al-Assad, but rather to prod him to change course. Most likely they will ask the Syrians to stop meddling in Lebanese political affairs and contribute more convincingly to stability and security in Iraq.
In view of Syria's proximity to Iraq and allegations that terrorists cross the Syria-Iraq border to wreak havoc on innocent Iraqis, the Baker-Hamilton Commission made mention of the fact that talks with Damascus would be indispensable to finding a solution to the Iraqi conflict.
So there you have it. Pay attention to the Baker-Hamilton reference. It's key. It isn't Pelosi who is betraying trust. It is the Bushies distrust of anyone who isn't on message (and loyal(tm)). Pelosi's triple whammy of being vaginally challenged, from San Francisco and shirking of the conservative burkha of writing Christian books and baking cookies that's at play. She's doing what was recommended by a contemplative, serious study of the problem. Unfortunately, she's not doing what she's supposed to be doing and what she's been ordered to do. Just wait for the accusation that she was in secretly talks for surrender to Al Qaeda at a clandestine meeting in a Amman sheesha parlor.
