Pelosi in Syria

Submitted by metulj on Wed, 2007/04/04 - 10:13am.

With all of the usual suspects whining about Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria as being either counterproductive or treasonous (you pick), it's nice to see that editorial pages in newspapers in the region are actually glad that she came. The Jordan Times is no anti-Bush rag. It is one of several mouthpieces for the ruling Hashemites and therefore rather predisposed toward whichever way the wind is blowing in Washington.

Link...

Aware that the road to solving many of the region's problems goes through Damascus, the powerful Democrat dismissed criticism of her visit, expressing her delegation's "clear intention to make our stances very clear to the Syrian leadership."

The U.S. Congressional delegation will not have traveled all the way to Syria simply to congratulate Bashar al-Assad, but rather to prod him to change course. Most likely they will ask the Syrians to stop meddling in Lebanese political affairs and contribute more convincingly to stability and security in Iraq.

In view of Syria's proximity to Iraq and allegations that terrorists cross the Syria-Iraq border to wreak havoc on innocent Iraqis, the Baker-Hamilton Commission made mention of the fact that talks with Damascus would be indispensable to finding a solution to the Iraqi conflict.

So there you have it. Pay attention to the Baker-Hamilton reference. It's key. It isn't Pelosi who is betraying trust. It is the Bushies distrust of anyone who isn't on message (and loyal(tm)). Pelosi's triple whammy of being vaginally challenged, from San Francisco and shirking of the conservative burkha of writing Christian books and baking cookies that's at play. She's doing what was recommended by a contemplative, serious study of the problem. Unfortunately, she's not doing what she's supposed to be doing and what she's been ordered to do. Just wait for the accusation that she was in secretly talks for surrender to Al Qaeda at a clandestine meeting in a Amman sheesha parlor.

Okay metulj,

The Prime Minister's Office issued a rare "clarification" Wednesday that, in gentle diplomatic terms, contradicted US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's statement in Damascus that she had brought a message from Israel about a willingness to engage in peace talks.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert emphasized in his meeting with Pelosi on Sunday that "although Israel is interested in peace with Syria, that country continues to be part of the Axis of Evil and a force that encourages terror in the entire Middle East."

What now?

Is your hero trying to help, or start a war?

If that is her brand of diplomacy, then the Speaker should stick to her day job. Even Jesse Jackson doesn't make mistakes like this and he is not the greatest diplomat.

Cat got your tongue?

War averted

Right. Ehud Olmert is currently polling in the single digits in his own country. He has no credibility.

What is fascinating is that Pelosi and her bipartisan group were able, by British, accounts to get Assad to influence Iran to go along with the British release.

Maybe you want war with Iran, but losers always choose losing propositions. I know we could just nuke 'em, but as a geographer let me tell you about a terrorist weapon called the Hadley Cell.

It is hysterical to think that Bush's foreign policy is basically to puff out chest and make threats. His secretary of state is off doing what? Pelosi goes over there and builds up more political capital in the region in one weekend that these morons have acquired in 6 years.

Like I said, it is just a matter of time before she's accused of a sit down with OBL where she discussed the total surrender of the US, the seizure of all its assets, the forced conversion of all non-Muslims and the beheadings of Bush et al. Please.

It's not just "the usual suspects"

Or is it?

Never mind that that statement is ludicrous: As any diplomat with knowledge of the region could have told Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Assad is a corrupt thug whose overriding priority at the moment is not peace with Israel but heading off U.N. charges that he orchestrated the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri. The really striking development here is the attempt by a Democratic congressional leader to substitute her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president. Two weeks ago Ms. Pelosi rammed legislation through the House of Representatives that would strip Mr. Bush of his authority as commander in chief to manage troop movements in Iraq. Now she is attempting to introduce a new Middle East policy that directly conflicts with that of the president. We have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush's military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Ms. Pelosi's attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish.

Given the Post's incessant

Given the Post's incessant beating of the war drums before and after the Iraq invasion, I'd say their editorial page certainly fits within the cluster of "usual suspects" regarding the Middle East.

But Ms. Pelosi's attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish.

Is this more or less foolish than Dennis Hastert doing the same thing during the Clinton presidency?

Hastert said he would to correct this situation and expedite aid to countries allied in the war on drugs and also encouraged Colombian military officials to "bypass the U.S. executive branch and communicate directly with Congress."

In an unsigned editorial, no less.

Complain to the WaPo ombudsman's office! And good luck.

A reminder to readers: Editorial opinion is not in my purview, and most columnists have wide latitude to write what they want, including the ombudsman.

Oh, heady stuff. Defining down "genocide" for Armenia, apparently.

The United States should leave Turkey and Armenia to resolve their dispute on whether the mass killings of Armenians in the wane of the Ottoman Empire constituted genocide, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a US Congressional committee Wednesday.

"What we've encouraged the Turks and the Armenians to do is to have joint historical commissions that can look at this, to have efforts to examine their past, and in examining their past to get over it," the AP quoted her as saying. "I don't think it helps that process of reconciliation for the United States to enter this debate at that level," Rice added.

Thousands of historians,

Thousands of historians, eyewitness accounts and a UN commission have confirmed the depth of the genocide and the architects of the Shoah cited Turkey's efficiency as a standard to be admired.

In sweeps that failed academic C-Rice to put her spin on it. Let's go ahead and say that this has everything to do with keeping Turkey happy as Iraq (and by extension, Kurdistan) becomes a huge problem on its southern border.

One of my committee members was at the Hoover Institute and reports that Rice mainly took up space and wrote articles about Czech armor strength.

Holy MoFo. That's just surreal. It's like someone bitching about the taste of the communion wafers in the midst of the Spanish Inquisition.

NATO membership has its privileges. And yet another connection to Pelosi.

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, backs the resolution and at first wanted a vote in April. But under Turkish pressure, Bush administration figures have lobbied for the Democrats in charge of Congress to drop the measure.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates sent strong letters of protest to her and to Representative Tom Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which has not set a date for the vote.
