N-S just put up the video of the inmate escape here.

Is that Lee Trammell waiting for the elevator with the inmate AND walking behind him out the door? If so, when exactly did he decide it would be a good time to make the phone call? Nice.

Update: This was not Lee Trammell in the video.

Looks like they snagged the guy: (link...)

That's not Tramel -- it's Ragsdale mouthpiece Dwight VandeVate (formerly Hutchison mouthpiece) and his assistant Lorna Norwood.

Dwight made call

I understand from yesterday's paper that it was Dwight Van de Vate who made the phone call, KTB.

In the video, that's Dwight coming down the hallway and rounding the corner to stop in front of the elevator. He appeared to immediately "rubberneck" at the inmate standing there, also waiting for the elevator, and it looks like he whipped his cell phone out pretty promptly. He appears to already have it at his ear as he and the inmate step into the elevator. Those details are consistant with the N-S story yesterday.

From the N-S story, Trammel also rode the elevator, so I suppose he stepped on the elevator's way down? The story implies that Dwight's cell phone conversation took place inside the elevator, presumably in front of the inmate, because it says Dwight was instructed to "grab him" just as the elevator's doors opened. The story says the inmate ran.

As for that last footage from a different camera angle, where the inmate is stepping onto the concourse leading to the exit, I can't tell who rounded the corner behind him, right as the clip ended. It certainly didn't look like the inmate was running, though, did it? *If* that was Trammel behind him (I really couldn't tell), he wasn't running either.

No, that *is* Dwight following him out the building...

...at a walking pace, and that's the same blond woman, too. On watching the clip again, he trashes that soda can he's shown holding earlier, while waiting for the elevator. He's still holding the phone to his ear! What, did they put him on hold???

I took a second look at the N-S story, too. It didn't say the inmate escaped as the elevator doors opened. It says that J. J. instructed Dwight to "grab him," but "by that time however, the elevator had reached the building's lobby and Johnson had raced (?) out the door, despite the efforts of both Van de Vate and...Tramel."

I shore don't see any racin.' Just Dwight, with that phone to his ear a pretty long time...

for the record...

the cartoon was based on the initial news report, which cited the presence of van de Vate and Tramell.

I heard it was Lumpy and Charles "appointed county commissioner despite being the only candidate to skip the public forum" Bolus.

That's a posse in which I have very little faith.

I spoke with Lumpy by phone Monday...

...because he and Sharon Cawood had asked me to attend that Monday morning Legislative Briefing on education that Hagood held at the Chamber. When I called him later that morn to report back on the Briefing, he was out.

He phoned me back (around lunchtime?) and explained that his car dealership had been robbed and vandalized sometime Sunday. He said he was losing his whole day to follow-up on the break-in.

It doesn't *sound* like he had time Monday to be tracking down an escaped inmate...

Lumpy: "Which way did he go?"

When Mr. Trouble comes around, you can bet that Lumpy will MAKE time to round him up.

Typically when blogging you don't go back and delete content even if it was wrong. If it will make people feel better I'll change the title and correct the content.

Next time I'll get my facts straight before posting. I sincerely apologize for this mistake.

Tip: the usual blogging

Tip: the usual blogging protocol is to include in the original post an update with the correction or clarification, and if the original post has scrolled off the front page, to put a new post directing readers to the corrected post. Some also like to use a striketrhough of the original text followed by the correction.

I remember driving by Lumpy's the other day and commenting to a friend that, will wonders ever cease, Lumpy has actually moved a car. That green Beetle is gone.

Then I see on the news last night. It's gone all right.
