Just went to get my weekly fix of Betty & Sandra and discovered they've redone the website. I now have to open a 6M pdf just to read these two columns.

Nagonnadoit.

I am not a happy camper.

Agree with you,

it ain't worth it. The paper is only good for bird cages.

I can't read it at all...

...Rachel. When I click on "Read Betty's story here," my screen just goes blank white (with no indication that anything is downloading). Dunno...

Maybe that's because it's such a big PDF. Do you have DSL? I can't imagine how long it would take to open this thing with dial-up.

Sandra, are you listening? Please do your online readers a huge favor and get this fixed.

The new website layout is nice, but I agree the HTML/text version of the columns is way better for online/web reading.

And it's not that hard. Adobe Acrobat has a built-in "export to HTML" function that outputs HTML that's pretty close and doesn't need a lot of touchup to publish on the web. And probably so does whatever publishing tool they are using for the print version.

My guess is they are in transition and still working on it. (And they must have a lot of "free" Scripps bandwidth to play with.)

If the idea is to make the print ads show online, they could include those in the HTML version, too.

PDF is OK for some things,

PDF is OK for some things, like reproducing datasheets or layout-intensive articles. It's bad for just shoveling content on the Web when converting it to HTML would make the reader much happier. Big PDFs are especially bad.

Deh utter ting is that Adobe's Acrobat software seems to be getting buggier and buggier as time goes on. My browser freezes up longer and longer when opening PDFs for the first time. The Pro version is also getting screwy with the latest updates.

Sigh

We are posting up PDFs because of complaints (many, many complaints) from folks who could not find the ads -- particularly the classified, specifically real estate, ads.

I'll come back next week with my column plus Jake, Bean and Marvin West in the old format in addition to the PDFs.

We've redesigned the website in preparation for the launch next week of our new West Side Shopper-News. Hopefully, we'll be putting a paper into your mailbox soon and you won't have to read online. -- s.

Thanks, Sandra. I would be

Thanks, Sandra. I would be at a loss without you & Bean every Sunday evening.

P.S. While you're a'fixin' things, the link to the Scoobie special report doesn't work.

I managed to read some of the Shopper tonight (after I got past that picture of the horny toad). I don't really care for having to adjust magnifications and such either but the price is right.
