The Feb. 26th meeting of Knox County Commission just got even more interesting. Chair Scott Moore has just requested (by hand-delivered letter, copies faxed to the commissioners, mayor and law director) a request for representatives of the sheriff's office to be there to present the evidence in the Tyler Harber investigation and to be prepared to answer questions about said items. --Mark Harmon

Investigation
Heck, Scott doesn't have to look far. The new 4th District commissioner Lee Tramel was one of the investigators. -- s.
Actions
Mr. Harmon - It seems there is evidence of a wrong-doing here, and if more is presented, what are you going to do about it? Or what can you do about it?
Actions
From the Knox County Charter, Article II-Legislative Branch, Section 2.20-Other Powers:
H. Upon adoption of an approving resolution in each instance by the affirmative vote of two-thirds (2/3) of the entire Commission, the Commission and its authorized committees shall have full power and authority to hold public hearings, with power to subpoena witnesses and to administer oaths where necessary or desirable, for the purpose of either (1) gathering information necessary or desirable for the purpose of considering proposed Commission legislation, or (2) investigating any allegation of violations of this Charter, ordinances or emergency ordinances of the Commission brought by either the Executive of Knox County or any member of the Commission against any elected official or employee of the County. No such hearing shall be held with or without such subpoena power having been exercised except when a quorum of the Commission or any authorized committee, as appropriate, is present. (End)
Things that make you go Hmm ...
Could this be a play by the Sheriff's possee to snuff out the Mayor's efforts to get a special election? Hmm ...
Or maybe ...
It's the Sheriff's possee's opening salvo in a final push against the Mayor and his ruffians? Hmm ...
Take Care, Be Good and don't play in the street!

Geez, more stuff for us all
Geez, more stuff for us all to be disgusted with.
Can we just lock Scoobie & Ragsdale in a closet and let them duke it out? Without Shurf Tim to help Scoobie, my $$ would be on Ragsdale.
Then we could schedule a Lumpy v. Ragsdale match. Sell tickets and give the proceeds to the school system. At least we'd get something of some small value out of this entire sorry mess.
Hypocritical
Lee Trammel did (does) the exact same thing for the sheriff as Tyler Harber did for the mayor - he was the political arm behind the sheriff's machine. You think he didn't (doesn't) do politics on the county's dime?
Trammel
I'm sure I read that Trammel's only education beyond high school was a year at the vocational-technical school; didn't I also read that he earns over $70,000 annually with the Sheriff Department? How often does that happen in this part of the country???
Courthouse Politics
As long as we elect officeholders they will employ folks with political skills and constituencies.
Ragsdale, however, is the only one in my memory to employ somebody (Harber) who hired out on county time as a political consultant to other candidates. Well, with the possible exception of Joe May working for Victor in the early years.
Even then, no one accused Joe/Victor of stealing others' mail and overthrowing the party leadership to obtain the donor list. -- s.
Yup
Agreed, Sandra. As a matter of degree, Ragsdale's actions (we think) are unparalleled.
Trammel
So you're saying its ok to work politics as long as they don't hire out to someone else? Maybe Ragsdale wasn't paying Harber enough. At $70k Trammel doesn't have to hire out to anyone else.
Also hypocritical is the well-known fact that fee office holders forced their people to work every election.
I say let's look at all of them, not just Ragsdale, if we're gonna "investigate" politics on county time.
Cleanin' house
knoxnative: "I say let's look at all of them..."
Again, in my utopia (repeat post)...
1) February 5: N-S sues old commission + Bolus.
2) Soon (February 26?): In their own agenda, hybrid commission (dragging along beholden appointees) opens investigation of Harber/Ragsdale.
3) Soon: In his own agenda, Ragsdale succeeds in snaring special election.
4) July: Shurf Tim gone.
5) September: Good People swarm polls to remove Bad Appointees.
6) Prior to swearing in of newly/duly elected commissioners, petulant hybrid commission pronounces guilt of Harber/Ragsdale and enjoins DA.
7) Newly/duly elected replacements to appointees sworn in.
8) Jones, fearful of votes lost in special election and of imminent votes to be lost in N-S suit, persuades courts to allow a double-header (N-S suit and DA action), so that he may sell tickets to fund Shurf Department pension plan.
9) First on deck (doesn't matter, really): N-S suit removes original perpetrators of January appointment process (plus Bolus), also condemns those term-limited and gone already.
10) Next up (or vice versa): DA condemns/removes Ragsdale, tells Harber to get outta town before sundown (we hafta haul him in to chase him out, ya know).
11) Only newly/duly elected commissioners remain to appoint their commission peers *and* Ragsdale's successor.
Ta-da!
Sandra
I don't understand Knox County Party politics.Back in the day,the Democrats of Hamblen County took over the Courthouse. It would have been preposterouse, for any Democrat,to "overthrow the Party's leadership to get a doner list."Because, the Sheriff, the Mayor of Morristown, the County Executive, the State Rep & Congressman Jim Cooper et al shared their listes with ANYONE running on the ticket. The Executive Committee was our Party list & one became a member of the Executive Committee simply by asking. If you wanted to be active,in the Party, you just showed up for a meeting;gave your 2 cents worth & voted on whatever was before us.Folks are always tellin me,that was a long time ago & what works,in Morristown, won't work in Knoxville.Politics is about votes & all those years ago;Hamblen County Democrats got more votes than the Republicans.
Clearly, Bill, you do not
Clearly, Bill, you do not understand Knox County Republicans. The party is too big and unwieldy to be harmonious -- it's the age-old split between the red-meat guys and what Cas used to call the "silk-stocking crowd." You can't make 'em all happy at once.
And they are carnivorous -- if not downright cannibalistic.
Carnivorous
Yeah, I'm chewing on a Lumpy Drumstick right now.
Look no further than the list of names in today's KNS to see the lack of unity in the Knox County Republican Party. We've got about a 100 folks wanting to replace Brian Hornback. And those are just the ones running! -- s.
Dems split, too
The Dems suffer splits of this type, too--especially at the national level. Wasn't it Kerry who landed himself in hot water recently with some offhand jab at Southern Dems with Confederate flags displayed in their pick-up trucks?!
Kurt Vonnegut coined a term, which he originally applied to Hoosiers in his home state, called "grandfalloons" (sp?). These groups, he said, were all "large, meaningless associations of people." Maybe he was right.
It was Howard Dean, I
It was Howard Dean, I believe, who mentioned the guys in pick-up trucks with the Confederate flags in the back.
Comment
Mr. Harmon - What do you plan on doing with the information you currently have on the Harber issue? Or is there anything the commission can do? Can you at least be Sandra's "smart commissioner"?
Hub Walters
was State Party Chair;appointed to the U.S Senate & lived in Morristown.Walters was a Clement man or,more to the point,Clement was a Walters man. When Walters passed away(1969),his nephews (George Herbert & Tracy Prater)& his proteges took control of the Hamblen County Democratic Party. These folks were very disciplined about winning elections. The only time,we split & man,did we split, was in the '78 primary between Jake & Bob Clement. But we got back together & started winning county elections. It's simple, when Party leadership is interested in winning elections;good things happen..but when leadership is interested in personal political power we have factions fighting each other.
