A word is born:

In a meeting today, one of the programmers mentioned “insertion, deletion, or updation of records in the table.”

Sheeesh.

407,000 results on Google. Including, of course, Dictionary of Indian English.

Not everyone likes the new word, but I do. Then again, I think faxer should be a word, as in printer/copier/faxer.

Interesting. I haven't adjusted to the word "upsert" in this context, where if the record exists it's updated, otherwise it's inserted into the table. Upsert sounds like something your cat does when it's sick. I guess we can look forward to the word "upsertion" soon. Remember you heard it here first.

A couple of years ago the Washington Post's Style Invitational asked people to send in modified words with accompanying definitions. Here is one I really liked:

Upsert? I like it. A lot

Upsert? I like it. A lot easier than saying "insert or update".

I typically, add, delete, or edit records in SQL Server.

Inserting, Upserting, or Updation sounds like terms from uber geeks with violent gameplaying tendencies that need more of a social life or perhaps a minor in English.

Freud would probably like those terms, however.
