How very disappointing:

Sources close to outgoing Maj. Leader Bill Frist tell the Hotline that Frist has decided not to run for President.

He will make a formal announcement this afternoon, the sources said.

Frist made the decision in recent days after consulting family, friends and advisers.

The devastating announcement is reportedly scheduled for 1 p.m.

The first part of Frist's

The first part of Frist's statement...

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER BILL FRIST ISSUED A STATEMENT FROM HIS OFFICE IN NASHVILLE. HERE IS THE FIRST PART OF THE TEXT, FROM HIS WEBSITE:

"My dad in his later years wanted to impart some wisdom to his grandchildren and great grandchildren he would never meet. One thing he wrote that has stuck with me- in fact been a clarion call to me - was "there is so much good to do in the world and so many ways to do it."

"Politics is a noble occupation. Medicine is a noble profession. Service to others underlies both.

"The people of Tennessee elected me twice to the U. S. Senate, and I was humbled and honored by their support and every day I did my best to serve them with integrity and common sense.

"Twelve years ago, I pledged to the people of Tennessee that I would serve two terms in the Senate - to serve as a true citizen legislator - and then return home. I said I'd come to the Senate with 20 years experience in healing, spend 12 years serving in Washington, then go right back to Tennessee to live where I grew up. I've never deviated from that commitment. And I will do just that.

"In the Bible, God tells us for everything there is a season, and for me, for now, this season of being an elected official has come to a close. I do not intend to run for president in 2008.

"Karyn and I will take a sabbatical from public life. At this point a return to private life will allow me to return to my professional roots as a healer and to refocus my creative energies on innovative solutions to seemingly insurmountable challenges Americans face.

"We have been blessed with the prayers and support of countless individuals around the country who have shared our vision of making America a better place. We thank you and pledge to represent these values in our daily lives and wherever our journey takes us next.

I suspect this passage from

I suspect this passage from the AP has more of the tinge of truth:

Frist Will Not Seek Presidency in 2008
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent
.....
For more than a year, Frist has been under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding allegations of insider trading in connection with the sale of shares in HCA Inc., a hospital chain and health company his father and brother founded. Frist has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, although he has not gained the quick resolution of the issue that he had hoped for.

Eleanor wins!!!!!

Yes, ma'am, you nailed that sucker!

Maybe he (stupidly) hopes this will all go away if he doesn't run for President, but I doubt it.

Factchecker's picture

Not to mention...

Also that he was against appeasing terrorists before he was for it. Then he flip-flopped and claimed he was against it again, after he realized the political implications of advocating negotiation with the Taliban.

Also

In the Bible, God tells us for everything there is a season, and...

Couldn't help but notice that once again it's apparently OK for Republicans to invoke their religion into their politics, but we learned repeatedly that it's not for Dems like Harold Ford.

Insiders say he is planning

Insiders say he is planning an online video clinic using a YouTube-type format. Patients can upload videos along with valid card numbers; he will then post their diagnoses. He has experimented with a similar model in the past and may have decided that this will offer a better opportunity than politics to serve the public.

I received this nice form

I received this nice form email from Dr. Frist's office on November 16:

Re: Your Concerns

Dear Friend:

Thank you for contacting me. After twelve years of proudly representing Tennessee in the United States Senate, I will be retiring from the Senate and returning home at the end of the year. I am proud of the progress, growth and change our country has experienced during this time.

One of the great difficulties of preparing to leave office is recognizing the limited time that is left to address matters of concern to Tennesseans. Therefore, it is with deep regret that I write to inform you that I will not be able to respond directly to your correspondence in the short time remaining.

It has been an honor to represent you in the United States Senate, and I am eternally grateful to the people of Tennessee for entrusting me with the privilege to serve.

Sincerely,

William H. Frist, M.D.
Majority Leader
United States Senate

I had sent him and Lamar emails about six months ago about a pending rail transportation bill.

WATE quoted him as saying he wanted to spend the next few years working for better health care for the average American. Excuse my ignorance but, how can a doctor in private practice have a better opportunity than a Senate Majority Leader when it comes to helping Americans with their health care? Hasn't he already allowed that bus to leave without him?

Just me musing a bit and daydreaming but, I see Frist sitting in his mini-replica of the White House in Nashville...rocking in his chair and every couple of days he'll shout, "Release the hounds, Smithers!" All the while, cackling to himself and rubbing his hands together as he works in imaginary lotion.

But, seriously...I think this decision had more to do with the on-going investigations by the SEC into his stock sales than anything else.

The Cat Came Back

There was no way Frist was ever going to shake his creepy admission of adopting cats from the animal shelter to practice his medical experiments.

"Desperate, obsessed with my work, I visited the various animal shelters in the Boston suburbs, collecting cats, taking them home, treating them as pets for a few days, then carting them off to the lab to die in the interests of science. And medicine. And health care. And treatment of disease. And my project..."

--Bill Frist, M.D. (in his book Transplant)

Maybe he'll make amends by starting up a new line of pet food?
