The minimum wage in more than 20 states and 26 cities and counties across the United States will increase starting on Jan. 1, affecting more than half of the country's population and marking the greatest jurisdictional raise in U.S. history.

21 states have a minimum wage of $7.25, which is the federal minimum wage.

Five of those states have no minimum wage laws, defaulting to use the federal minimum wage. All five are in the southeast, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina.
