The UT College Republicans and College Democrats set up a debate between State Representative Stacy Campfield and challenger candidate Schree Pettigrew that was supposed to be today at 7:00 p.m.
I left at 7:30, and Rep. Campfield hadn't arrived. The buzz around the room was that he had a last minute scheduling conflict. Eh, it happens I guess.
Personally, I think he didn't want to get whipped again. His ego was surely bruised from the WATE Gene Patterson interview. Or, perhaps he thought this fellow was going to be a panelist? Who knows. In the end (at 7:30, for me) he was no where to be seen. Curiously, neither were the College Republicans.
I noticed a couple pretty decent reporters there (you know who you are); maybe they'll be writing on this as well.
Update: corrected Mr. Patterson's name

That's HUGE. Schree needs to
That's HUGE. Schree needs to hammer him on this. Big bad old Campfield afraid of a girl (heh).
Campfield was pretty fuzzy on details throughout the WATE debate. Gene Patterson challenged him a couple of times to back up his claims and Campfield stammered and stumbled. And Schree nailed him on health care and education.
Did you notice Campfield's body language at the end of the debate/interview? There was a big sigh of relief that it was over. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
Very interesting. No wonder he doesn't want to face off with Shree.
Campfield
Maybe he went to meet his friend:

I wonder what Eatherly said when Campfield tried to register him to vote when he moved into Campfields home.
(link...)
sounded good, but. . .
is it going to matter, no matter how much better she is?
Campfield got 70% of the vote against a candidate (Drennen) who was backed by Ben Atchley, Bill Haslam, Mike Ragsdale, anyone else with the last name of Haslam and scores of other republicans and all of their money working against him.
I think it will matter
Lee,
I think it will matter. How much though is anybody's guess. Drinnen ran an absolutely dog awful campaign. He did very little except put up some yard signs and it would seem counted on the "silk stocking Republican" crowd to carry him past the primary. Schree is smarter than that and is running a very smart and hardworking campaign unlike Drinnen.
Take Care, Be Good and don't play in the street!
SteveMule
Drennen. . .
he wasn't lazy (I know that's not your word). I got invites to events of his, know he was out going door to door and he sent mailer after mailer. He knows how to run a campaign, he's been around enough of them (Haslam, Bedford Chapman, Ellen Adcock, for example). Campfield only takes the day off after an election to not campaign. He's like Jimmy Duncan and Tim Burchett, always campaigning.
So, where was he tonight?
So, where was he tonight?
Just Johnny
the correct spelling is Gene PATTERSON
It's a values thing.
The way I see it, this comes down to a question of values. Schree is the hardest working candidate in this race - she took the time to show up to the debate, and Stacey bailed. You have to wonder why, though after the drubbing he took on WATE, maybe he realized that joint appearances just aren't in his interest.
But here's what gets me: This debate was arranged by college students. These young people are working hard to try and get their peers, who generally aren't involved or informed about the political process, to sit up and take notice. Maybe there weren't going to be tons of voters there, but this is about the educational process, too. By bailing on a debate he had apparently committed to, he left the students in the lurch.
Of course, when it comes to not paying taxes on his dilapidated properties and bringing convicted child rapists into the district to live with him, Stacey has shown his values loud and clear. Just add another one to the list.
being fair:
I was told by the UTCR president that the UT Democrat president had called and told him that my opponent did not want to do it so it was called off. I was told at about 6:00 pm so I doubt much word got out to anyone. I was ready to go. ( Stacey Campfield )
Well then, perhaps the debate will be rescheduled? That will determine the truth in his statement, for me.
Ditch Debate?
Maybe he was hanging at Fulton High School with the sheriff. Or was it Vine Middle School. In any case I am sure it was for public service.
