Broyles has zero credibility on county commission, they know it
No problem rolling anything Amy Broyles would object to, nobody is going to listen to her anyway. Everybody knows it including the puppet masters and the balance of the folks on county commission.
And the second district is about as irrelevant in the big scheme of things in Knox County as it gets, take 640, Louis' Restaurant, and Litton's Restaurant out of the Second District and there isn't a whole lot there to get excited about.
Blech
(in reply to Elwood Aspermonte)
As disgusting and offensive as your statement is, I'm curious to hear what you think is relevant in the big scheme of things in Knox County
Uncalled for negativity
(in reply to Elwood Aspermonte)
Nasty comment, totally uncalled for. Go away.
Amy has done a great job representing her district.

MP twitter post: PolitiKnox @PolitiKnox · 5h
Broyles - this is black Wednesday all over again "a slap in the face to every resident of the 2nd District"
McKenzie - puppetmaster is at play in Knox co
How? How in the world could this be a Sunshine Law violation? This was the last meeting for four Commissioners. That is an extreme insult to throw at the last meeting. And it has no basis in truth.
As KV former regular Rachel loves to remind, even if there was a puppet master, that is not a Black Wednesday Sunshine Law violation. People can talk to Commissioners. Commissioners can talk to Commissioner, they just can't deliberate. There is zero evidence of Black Wednesday. Much less a Puppet Master.
There was a lot of difference in the resumes of the final two people. From Mike Hammond, "John Fugate has a Master's of Education, certification for Superintendent of Schools, been a Principal, and a Coach, Major in secondary education. The second place vote getter, Rick Staples? Much less educational experience. Maybe the weakest resume of the group.
Puppet Master? How about a more qualified candidate?
What an insult to Commissioners on their final day. Commissioners Broyles and McKenzie owe the Commission an apology. Politics would have been to select the lesser qualified candidate.
So,
who are the puppet masters?
who are the puppet masters?
(in reply to Average Guy)
Birmingham and McElroy.
Uh, sure
(in reply to Bad Paper)
Which is why McElroy specifically editorialized against Fugate?
(link...)
I saw what McElroy meant in that editorial
(in reply to cwg)
The KNS Puppet Master wrote, "Could a coup to oust the superintendent during the three-month window be a possibility? Perhaps, though that seems a bit extreme — and expensive, given the cost of a buyout."
Yep, I see right through that. The buyout is too much.
Your Tweets were quite curious yesterday: (link...)
Broyles - this is black Wednesday all over again "a slap in the face to every resident of the 2nd District"
McKenzie - puppetmaster is at play in Knox co
So why is a KNS reporter calling everyone today asking if the new Puppet Master talked to them? As opposed to the old Puppet Master? What we have here is a Puppet Master gap. (link...)
There was no collusion on
There was no collusion on this vote.
It's no secret that the majority of the commission is unhappy with the way KCS is being run, therefore it should not surprise anyone that they'd be looking for the interim school board candidate who will be most closely aligned with their views.
I attended the LWV forum at Gresham and watched the called commission meeting where the candidates spoke, and it was obvious to anyone who watched with a halfway critical eye how the vote was going to go. Fugate was critical of the superintendent (although not entirely, and rather mildly, actually). The others waffled. Mrs. Cannon, who is no doubt a very fine person, kept saying she didn't have enough information to answer questions directly pertaining to the superintendent, and others used coded language about being "team players" and being PTA moms, stuff that's become synonymous with supporting the superintendent over the past couple of years (see Rowcliffe and Trainor for examples).
I listened to a couple of commissioners chatting with Fugate afterward, and it was clear that they liked him. No Sunshine violation in that.
Nobody can be surprised that Tony Norman would go with whomever he believes would be least likely to roll over for the supe, and no one will ever convince me that he has colluded with anyone. He's not that kind.
When I heard that R. Larry had invited Fugate to a local business and professional club last week, it was clear to me that Fugate had at least five votes without even trying hard. He's been a teacher, principal and a coach (albeit a long time ago) and the vote is entirely supportable on the basis of his background. Plus, he's a Republican.
Rick Staples seems like a nice enough guy and is a snappy dresser, but had the weakest resume of the bunch. He's the only one of the candidates without a college degree and doesn't have a track record of expertise or demonstrated interest in schools. Plus, he's a Democrat. Do the math.
For those who are shocked that politics was involved in this vote, get over it:

I just hope my agreeing doesn't make her rethink it.
And she is exceptionally right about Tony Norman, who never left his seat on the day people went into the hall and cut deals about who to appoint to Commission.

Yes, Steve...a group of us gave McIntyre some basic communications/relationships advice. It's been a while, and it certainly didn't involve their PR.
As for who I represent, I only work for people/companies that I think are good folks. Pilot is not a client, but I disagree with Toby and his Satan comparison. I think Pilot has been a significant contributor to a lot of the good things that have happened in this community. I think there are a lot of non-profits doing great work in this region that would be supplying a lot less service without the generosity of both Pilot Flying J and the Haslam family. I would would be happy to work for them.

Commission chose a member that won't run for the seat
come November, however, it will be interesting to see who can assemble a successful out of sequence campaign in that district for the vacated Kincannon seat.
While non-partisan, there will again be lots of Republican voters at the polls that cycle.
In my opinion, nobody listens to Amy Broyles and there isn't any deference to her preferences or recommendations even in her own district.
Can't blame County Commission on this one, they chose a caretaker that has no love for the current administration, we'll have a smart Fugate on the board now and a puppet Fugate on the board now and in my opinion the puppet was not just appointed, she was elected earlier this month.
what a joke
McKenzie and Broyles are the most loyal Commissioners to McIntyre. They have no shame. I saw the drama this morning on Youtube. (link...)
The fix didn't happen. That's why they were so upset.
Qualified?
How can you say Fugate is the most qualified? He quit education in 1974. Charlotte Dorsey was the most qualified in terms of recent, actual in-the-schools experience.
If Rick Staples was the choice for the Second District, why wasn't he selected? I cannot help but think a white, male, who talks about taxes and immigrants (OMG!) was the choice of the majority. What else is new? If that's political or not is just wording.
How can you say Fugate is the
(in reply to Treehouse)
If you're addressing me, I didn't say Fugate was the most qualified. I said Staples was the least qualified.
I also said that in the end, these guys vote for whom they want, and have their own reasons. That's the way it is and ever shall be.
And each side always accuses the other side of playing politics. And they're always right.
Others
I saw that others called Fugate the most qualified. Didn't mean to address that to just you.
Big Jim's Rolodex was an
Big Jim's Rolodex was an expression that everyone was familiar with, back in the day (and not so long ago, actually).
He could raise more money in half a day than everybody else could scrape up in a month. He had a say in filling any office he was interested in, from delinquent tax attorney to U.S. Senate.
I do not recall anyone calling him a puppetmaster.
I've lived in the 2nd District since 1982 and been a reporter covering local issues for 25 years. I can tell you this: my Oakwood Lincoln Park neighbors talk to me about political stuff they get riled up about. I've not heard a single word from them about this appointment. It's just not on their radar screen. I've even asked some of them. They didn't know what I was talking about.
There's too much pearl clutching going on up in here.
I'm going to correct myself
(in reply to Bbeanster)
I'm going to correct myself here:
It's not true that nobody called Big Jim a 'puppet master,' or the rough equivalent thereof.
Madeline Rogero called Big Jim out in 2003 when she ran for mayor against Bill Haslam.
A TV spot featuring Madeline in a wig playing the part of "Big Jane Rogero," the woman who pulls the strings in this town, only ran a couple of times before it was taken down. A lot of her supporters (and Haslam's) thought that commercial did her in (she was very close to Haslam in both campaigns' internal polls).
I thought it was freaking hilarious.
Had nothing to do with any of
Had nothing to do with any of their PR
What the hell else could you competently advise them about? Electrical wiring in schools? Heating and air?
"Nothing" is an absolute.
KnoxNews, I believe wrote the story about you meeting with McIntyre when you were on here saying, I believe, you had "no association" with him.
As far as MacKenzie et al, I think they are using the tried and true tactic of accusing others of what they do.
I don't know about Fugate, guess he'll most likely vote with his distant relative.

I am a little surprised that you are even implying I could competently give PR advice.

The sunshine law allegations
The sunshine law allegations against Amy are bogus, which is why you haven't heard any more about them.
I'd cut JMac a bit of slack
I'd cut JMac a bit of slack re pregnancy as a disability. He's just echoing the language of the the state law on maternity leave for teachers. Not saying that doing so was smart, just that he probably does have a legal leg to stand on.
That doesn't mean this was a smart or kind thing to do:
0520-1-2-.04 LEAVE FOR TEACHERS.
(1) The term “teacher” shall mean any person employed by a local board of education in a position which requires a license issued by the State Department of Education. The term “teacher” shall not apply to a substitute teacher.
(2) Sick Leave. “Sick leave” shall mean leave of absence because of illness of a teacher from natural causes or accident, quarantine, or illness or death of a member of the immediate family of a teacher, including the teacher’s wife or husband, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law. Upon written request of the teacher accompanied by a statement from her physician verifying pregnancy, any teacher who goes on maternity leave shall be allowed to use all or a portion of her accumulated sick leave for maternity leave purposes during the period of her physical disability only, as determined by a physician.

Another inexplicable FaceBook post
Karen Carson with the ultimate let them eat cake FaceBook post: (link...)
I think this is the worst School Board member ever. Arrogant. Conceited, Amoral. This person needs to be ousted.
"Karen Carson This would be good if Donila had some of his facts correct--he doesn't. First the Board has never signed any agreement and did not ask new members to sign on to an agreement. The Board did establish a working agreement and also revised and renegotiated it every time the members of the Board changed. The Board never held this as a legal or binding document (as evidenced by its numerous changes over the years) The agreement did not say Board members could not ask questions that would stump the superintendent. It did say that we would not hold items/questions/concerns until the meeting for the sole purpose of stumping/embarrassing the superintendent or staff. The purpose of this is to diminish political grandstanding and to make sure concerns are addressed as quickly as possible so as not to delay fixing issues that affect our kids. The board did decide that issues should first be addressed at the lowest level possible, meaning if I get a call about an issue at school "x", I will go first to the teacher or principal at school x. All of these have been blown out of proportion and are far away from any truth and could have been prevented if the board member elect had asked a question to her colleagues (in an open discussion in a sunshined meeting) ."
Grasping at signature straws
Apparently, the School Board is stumped on how to answer for an absurd agreement.
So they're chasing a corrected red herring.
Carson also seems to have trouble with reading comprehension.
Let's see if the petition to recall Carson, Fugate gets started
These bafoons have been exposed in the worst possible light and instead of doing there jobs and representing the families whose children are enrolled in the Knox County Public Schools in the district they represent, they completely disregard their role, sacking the representative function all for the purpose of trying to be big cheese in a tiny little refridgerator and they are out of ideas, they are completely out of touch and out of time and Fugate and Carson out to be run out of town right behind Jimmy Mac.
Horrible, absolutely horrible. Maybe in Russia, but certainly not in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.
Doug Harris
Pretty funny to see that Doug Harris linked to Cari Gervin's post on the Daily Pulse as a defense to Stephen Arnolds's FaceBook post on the BOE side agreement.
(link...)
I thought only PR firms came to the rescue like that. I guess papers can too.
So called "agreement"?
(in reply to Bad Paper)
Thought that's what it's titled.
"Not binding", "just been a working agreement", "not carved in stone", "simply to note", "sun-shined, sun-shined, SUN-SHINED", "Roundtree alone asked", "We could have explained it", "law director has no idea", "and the Board wanted to explicitly spell out its expectations"**, “It’s not a contract. I would characterize it as a protocol,”, “They’re really just guidelines more than anything else.”
Much ado about nothing?
If that's the case, it sure is taking an awful lot to explain "nothing".
** the Board came up with the "stumped" language? Since everyone has such vivid recollection, I hope the next report will include the author of that little ditty.
