For those of you who saw (or missed) the amazing Big Ears performance of Steve Reich's piece last night at the Tennessee, here's a real treat: the same piece performed at the 2013 Lowlands Festival in Holland. What struck me about the performance (last night) was its visual and sonic vitality, requiring of the musicians exceptional stamina and virtuosity. These qualities of Reich's work are captured in this stunning video.

So Percussion's take on Reich's "Drumming"

was well worth catching as well - here's Part I (a Vic Firth promo).

(Can't find any of the other parts of this piece as performed by So Percussion/Nief-Norf, but wow.)

The Jay Pritzker Pavilion,

The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, set against the surrealistic backdrop of neighboring skyscrapers, stands in Chicago's Millennium Park as a giant sculptural prop. Viewed directly or distorted by the reflective curved surface of Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate, the 120-foot-high shell and its expansive adjoining trellis seem at first to be gratuitous decoration but are in fact functional elements in the most sophisticated electronic sound reinforcing system ever devised. Over 100 computer-programmed loudspeakers are suspended from the tubular lamella structure, providing time-corrected sound to the 4,000 fixed seats nearest the stage and 7,000 additional places on the lawn. Together these elements form a virtual volume that provides both visual and acoustic intimacy in an outdoor theater that covers nearly four acres.
